Ohio State’s Chris Wells has informed several teammates he will skip his senior season and enter the NFL Draft, according to a source with knowledge of the conversations. The junior running back is a likely top five selection, said one NFL scout we spoke with.
On Tuesday, Wells was not among six Buckeyes who turned in forms that will gage their potential draft status. Our source indicated this was unnecessary as Wells already has a grasp on where he will be selected. Since 2006, an underclassman running back has been selected in the top seven each year. This season, both the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns, both of whom need running back help, are likely to have top ten selections.
In three seasons, Wells has 569 carries, 3,276 yards, and 30 touchdowns. This season, despite injuries (three games missed), he has 191 carries, 1,091 yards, and 8 touchdowns. He closed his junior season with four one hundred yard efforts in five contests (three consecutive).
