The Arena Football League has canceled the 2009 season for the Columbus Destroyers, Cleveland Gladiators and the rest of its teams subject to agreement of the players union.
The AFL's owners voted against playing next season during a conference call Sunday night and announced the move Monday. The league gave no timetable for its return.
The AFL had been in limbo for weeks. The 16-team league had delayed indefinitely the start of free agency, the release of next season's schedule and a dispersal draft to award players from the defunct New Orleans Voodoo.
The league has not selected a permanent replacement for longtime commissioner David Baker, who resigned from the 22-year-old league two days before the ArenaBowl in July.
Less than one week ago, the AFL ignored all speculation and pledged to play next season… Now , they vanish… I know they say they’ll play again, but you have to wonder if we’ve seen our last Destroyers game…
