10 TV: A man was arrested and charged Wednesday in connection with the death of a 4-month-old girl. Izabella Fields died on July 29 after she was transported to Nationwide Children's Hospital from a home on Snyder Court, located on the city's northeast side. An autopsy later revealed that the child died from head trauma and her death was ruled a homicide, police said. On Wednesday, Richard Davidson was apprehended in Knox County and charged in connection with Fields' death. Davidson, 25, faces charges of murder and felonious assault.
10 TV: Police said that a man died Thursday afternoon after he was shot earlier in the day. Dominque L. Searcy, 21, died at Grant Medical Center shortly before 2 p.m., according to police. The shooting took place in the 1000 block of Studer Avenue on the south side. Investigators said that at about 12:30 p.m., Searcy was found lying on the sidewalk in front of a home. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Columbus police homicide squad at 614-645-4730.

Sexual Monster Is Sentenced
NBC 4: A man who said he has had sex with 800 to 900 women over the past seven years was sentenced Thursday. Edwin “Gene” Zimmerman, 47, was sentenced to 20 years in prison without the chance for parole.
He was sentenced in Franklin County Common Pleas Court on two first-degree felony rape charges and one attempted rape charge. Judge Richard Frye also fined him $35,000 and labeled him as a sexual predator. He pleaded guilty to those charges Monday, June 22.
Zimmerman, 46, was arrested Thursday, July 3, 2008, after two women said they were abducted for sex. When he was arrested, Zimmerman told investigators he had slept with 800 to 900 women during the past seven years. Investigators said Zimmerman claimed to have targeted homeless women and prostitutes on the city’s West Side.

Husband, Wife Sentenced For Robberies
NBC 4: Robert Hustead, 36, and his wife, Michelle Hustead, 22, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery charges with firearm specifications and were sentenced in the Franklin County Common Pleas Court. Both Robert and Michelle were given a sentence of nine years in prison each plus restitution. Authorities said Robert and Michelle were responsible for nine local robberies from December 2008 through January 2009, including the robbery of a Walgreens at 4101 Cleveland Ave. Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009.

Raids Target Two Robbers
NBC 4: SWAT, troopers and the bomb squad were at a North Side apartment complex after officers found a live grenade while serving a search warrant. CPD SWAT was serving a search warrant on a burglary suspect on the 2400 block of Goldengate Square in the Abbey Lane Apartment complex. Columbus police evacuated one apartment building, knocking on the doors of about 20 apartments Thursday morning. The evacuation lasted for about two to two-and-a-half hours. Authorities also stopped northbound Cleveland Avenue traffic. A male burglary suspect was arrested from the address. Apparently, police were tipped off that a vehicle with electronics and other items was sitting in an apartment parking lot. Police impounded the vehicle. Authorities said the suspect kept calling about the vehicle so authorities released it to him and followed him back to the Abbey Lane complex and saw him taking allegedly stolen goods out of the vehicle. A female suspect also was apprehended at the apartment on outstanding warrants. Costume jewelry reportedly was found in the apartment Thursday.

Marijuana, LSD Factor Into Comfest Fatality
10 TV: Toxicology results show that LSD was found in the brain of an 18-year-old man who died at Comfest in June. Police were called to Comfest on June 27 and found Bryan Barbin, who had four to five stab wounds. Barbin died from his injuries at Grant Medical Center. According to the Franklin County coroner’s office, toxicology exams found LSD in the victim’s brain and that his blood tested positive for marijuana.

Claret Withdraws Clemency Request
NBC 4: Former Ohio State football star Maurice Clarett has withdrawn a request for early release from prison that he said would allow him to pursue an NFL career. Prisons spokeswoman JoEllen Culp said Wednesday that a letter from Clarett explaining his decision arrived at the Ohio Parole Board on Monday.
Clarett had argued that the sooner he was released, the sooner he could make a comeback, possibly in the NFL. Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien objected, saying the former Buckeyes standout hadn’t made a strong case to be released so early in his prison term.
Clarett was sentenced in September 2006 to serve at least 3 1/2 years for a holdup outside a Columbus bar and a separate highway chase earlier that year. He could still be out as early as March.

10 TV: A male suspect allegedly robbed a West Side Huntington Bank Monday morning, and local authorities asked for your help to ID him. A male entered the Huntington Bank at 121 Georgesville Rd. at about 9:21 a.m. He handed the teller a note that said he had a weapon, he was robbing the bank and he wanted cash, authorities said. The suspect placed a small, zippered bag on the counter. The teller placed money from her drawer into the bag. No weapon was seen. The suspect fled the bank with the bag in an older, light blue-colored vehicle that was driven by a white male wearing a white T-shirt, authorities said. The suspect was described as a white male in his 20s. He is about 5 feet 8 inches tall with a thin build. He was wearing a black Pittsburgh Pirates baseball cap; a red, long-sleeved OSU T-shirt; baggy blue jeans and blue tennis shoes. Anyone with information on the suspect was encouraged to call the Franklin County sheriff’s office at 614-462-3351 or the FBI at 614-744-2168.

CPD Issues Missing Child Alert
NBC 4: Columbus police issued an endangered missing child alert late Thursday. Fathima Rifqa Bary, 16, was seen last at her North Side home Sunday, July 19. Fathima is 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighs about 90 pounds. She has black eyes and hair. Columbus police said what she was wearing when she was seen last was unknown. Officers also said Fathima may have been near the OSU campus Sunday, July 19. Anyone with information on Fathima’s whereabouts was encouraged to call CPD’s missing persons unit at 614-645-2358.

Police Impersonations Welcome & Wretched
NBC 4: A man fatally shot an armed intruder while protecting his 5-year-old relative late Wednesday, authorities said. CPD said the incident started with a home invasion but it was the suspect who was fatally shot. CPD was called to a home on the 1500 block of Autumn Village Drive on reports of a shooting at about 11 p.m. Wednesday. Officers found a man on a front porch with a gunshot wound to his neck. The armed suspect broke into home shortly before he was fatally shot, CPD said. As the armed suspect entered the home, a man picked up his 5-year-old relative to protect child as well as a firearm and fired shots, according to authorities. The suspect attempted to flee the home after being wounded but collapsed on the porch. He died a short time later. Anyone with additional information on the city’s 49th homicide of 2009 was asked to call the CPD homicide squad at 614-645-4730.
NBC 4: Columbus police are investigating two incidents where suspects have impersonated police officers. According to police, the first incident involved a business on the city’s east side. An employee said she received a phone call from a man who identified himself as a police officer. The suspect allegedly said he would be in the neighborhood to collect money in an effort to patrol the area due to recent burglaries involving area business. The suspect appeared at the business and asked for a large amount of money, but when the employee informed him she did not have that much, he negotiated a price, left a receipt and Fraternal Order of Police sticker. The suspect left the scene in a light gray or olive green sport utility vehicle, which was driven by another unidentified man. About one month later, another incident involved an elderly man who was watering his lawn. He was approached by a male and female suspect, police said. The suspects held up badges as they approached the victim, showed him a picture of a man in a wanted poster, and coerced the victim into allowing them in his house. The victim became suspicious after a few minutes and stated he was calling 911. The suspects left the home, but not before taking cash and jewelry. In both incidents the suspects were well dressed. The male suspect was described as a black male, 30 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 160 to 170 pounds. He was clean cut with a mustache and was wearing a gray suit and cream-colored tie. The female suspect was described as a black female, 35 years old, 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 165 pounds. The second male suspect was described as black male, 50 years old, weighing 210 pounds with gray or partially gray hair described as being processed with waves.

Dog Murderer: The Public Fired Me
10 TV: A firefighter who was terminated earlier this month for killing his dogs before going on vacation is trying to get his job back. Former Columbus fireman David Santuomo filed a notice of appeal on Friday with the City of Columbus…
Santuomo wrote in his appeal that public opinion played a role in his termination. "I feel I was unfairly discharged due to public opinion and political pressure. Not for job performance," Santuomo wrote."
The Civil Service Commission will review the appeal. There was no timetable on when a decision would be rendered. Santuomo, 43, was fired from his on July 16 by Mitchell Brown, the city's safety director. He was terminated after pleading guilty last month to animal cruelty charges. Santuomo will begin serving a 90-day jail sentence on Sept. 16.
In December, authorities found the bodies of two dogs in a Dumpster behind Fire Station 27. Santuomo, who allegedly bragged to fellow firefighters that he shot his dogs because he was leaving for vacation, told his superiors that he killed the dogs because they accidentally consumed antifreeze.

10 TV: Two people were in custody after police said a man was stabbed in the chest early Tuesday. Officers said two men got into a fight at about 12:30 a.m. on Columbus Avenue, located near Lockbourne Road on the city's east side… A man was stabbed multiple times in the chest. The victim, whose name was not immediately released, was transported to Grant Medical Center, where he died.

In those crimes, police said they cut a hole just large enough to get their arms through.

Gaswerks Puncher Will Serve Sixty Days
10 TV: A man who pleaded guilty to throwing a punch that killed a man outside an Arena District bar was sentenced on Monday to 60 days in jail. Brent Goode also received a four-year suspended jail term, was sentenced to three years probation and will be under house arrest for 60 days… Last month, Goode pleaded guilty to felonious assault in connection with the death of Nick Foss.
Investigators said that on April 6, 2008, the two men got into an argument about a case of beer outside GasWerks bar, located at 487 Park St. According to prosecutors, the argument escalated and Goode punched Foss, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement… Foss, a nursing student, died from his injuries a few days later.
Judge Stephen L. McIntosh issued a challenge to Goode to make something of his life because he was responsible for taking one with so much potential. "We have a life sentence that's with us every day," said Charles Foss, the victim's father. "You don't come to terms with it."
Terri Foss, the victim's mother, said that she misses the text messages she used to get from Nick that said he loved her. The case was moved to a larger courtroom because an overflowed crowd. McIntosh said that in his 25 years on the bench that he has never seen such an outpouring of support for one individual.

Gum Vanishes & Gun Violence
10 TV: Authorities hope images from surveillance video can help them identify a woman who they believe has stolen several hundred dollars worth of chewing gum from the gift shop inside Nationwide Children's Hospital. According to police, the woman stole packs of gum from the gift shop three times in June… The thefts added up to more than $600, investigators said. Authorities said the woman wore the same clothes during each of the thefts. Anyone with information was asked to call Columbus police.

The woman who lives there said that the gunmen threatened her at gunpoint as they demanded to know the whereabouts of the person they were seeking. After pleading for several minutes, police said the men finally left the apartment.

Comfest Fatality Was Accidental
10 TV: Further investigation has revealed that the stabbing death of an Ohio University student at this past weekend's Community Festival was not criminal in nature, police said Monday. Police also said that Bryan Barbin's death is being ruled accidental by the Franklin County Coroner's Office, pending the completion of lab results.
Barbin,18, was stabbed multiple times Saturday evening at the festival known as ComFest. The three-day event is held annually at Goodale Park, located just north of downtown. Witnesses said they saw two people on the ground and it looked like they were wrestling…
Barbin, 18, was transported to Grant Medical Center, where he died shortly after midnight. Police detained and questioned a teenager who was with Barbin. Police later released him without pressing charges.

10 TV: A 13-year-old boy convicted of arson in a south side fire was taken into custody Monday after he escaped from a juvenile facility for the second time. According to firefighters, authorities arrested Ryan Parsley on Markison Avenue, located in South Columbus, at about 10:30 a.m. Earlier this month, Parsley pleaded guilty to helping set a Barthman Avenue home on fire in January… Parsley was placed on two years' probation and Franklin County Children's Services, which received custody of Parsley, assigned the boy to the New Horizon Youth Center, a secure residential treatment facility in the village of Bethesda in Belmont County in eastern Ohio. He escaped from that facility last week. Parsley had previously escaped from a Franklinton treatment center in March. He turned himself in a few weeks later.

Death Dulls Comfest Weekend
NBC 4: Conflicting reports are being made as to how an 18-year-old man died at Comfest this weekend. At about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Columbus police were dispatched to Goodale Park for a disturbance call.
According to Sgt. Rich Weiner, upon arrival, officers spotted two people, one covered in blood, the other nearby and held for questioning. Weiner said a knife was recovered, and witnesses were also questioned.
The victim, 18-year-old Bryan Barbin, suffered four to five stab wounds and later died from his injuries at Grant Medical Center.
According to Columbus police radio dispatchers, officers were questioning a “suspect” a short time after the incident. However, as of 9:20 p.m. Sunday, no charges or arrests have been made. Police Commence Gang Initiative
10 TV: Police are launching a summer initiative aimed at taking down known gang members in neighborhoods throughout the city… Detective Thad Alexander has 25 years experience identifying and targeting gang members in Columbus. His latest target is the A-block boys in the city's Franklinton neighborhood.
Alexander says that gang's members are suspected in a string of arsons, break-ins and neighborhood intimidation. "A lot of these individuals think they can go around and terrorize people," Alexander said. "They get slapped on the wrist."
Walt Green, 13, said that he knows gangs operate in his neighborhood, located in the vicinity of Livingston and Miller avenues on the city's east side. "I wouldn't go around the neighborhood at 10 o' clock at night," Green said.
On the city's north side, in the area of Indianola and Seventh avenues, detectives said they've seen gang members crossing out a rival's graffiti. Investigators worry the display of disrespect could spell trouble for the neighborhood… In order to combat gang activity, police are joining forces with prosecutors. Known gang members arrested this summer will face felony gang charges, police said. In addition, anyone convicted of a felony two gang charge will face anywhere from 1-8 years in prison…

Walt Green, 13, said that he knows gangs operate in his neighborhood, located in the vicinity of Livingston and Miller avenues on the city's east side. "I wouldn't go around the neighborhood at 10 o' clock at night," Green said.
On the city's north side, in the area of Indianola and Seventh avenues, detectives said they've seen gang members crossing out a rival's graffiti. Investigators worry the display of disrespect could spell trouble for the neighborhood… In order to combat gang activity, police are joining forces with prosecutors. Known gang members arrested this summer will face felony gang charges, police said. In addition, anyone convicted of a felony two gang charge will face anywhere from 1-8 years in prison…

Clarett Wants A Pardon?
NBC 4: Former Ohio State football star Maurice Clarett is asking for a pardon from Gov. Ted Strickland. Clarett was sentenced in September 2006 to serve at least 3 1/2 years for a holdup outside a Columbus bar and a separate highway chase that ended with police finding loaded guns in his SUV.
Clarett has asked the Ohio Parole Board and Strickland for executive clemency in the form of a pardon, reprieve or commutation of his sentence. Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien says Clarett hasn’t made a strong case that he should be released so early in his prison term. “If I was a defense council in such a case, I would talk to the prosecutor before I filed the written application. The written application was signed and notarized by Mr. Clarett April 10 and so, if I wanted to know the prosecutor’s opinion, I would seek that before I filed,“ O’Brien said.
His attorney says Clarett has an opportunity to play NFL, arena or Canadian professional football if he’s released within the next few months. According to Percy Squire, Clarett’s attorney, the request isn’t a ‘sealed deal.’ Squire said that while Clarett has filled out the paperwork, he hasn’t decided whether to actively pursue a pardon.
Clarett’s attorney said he is going to take a few days before he decided whether to continue with the clemency request. He will be eligible for parole next March.
As a tailback, Clarett led the Buckeyes to an undefeated season and a National Championship win in 2002, but he never played another game for OSU. Clarett was suspended for the 2003 athletic year after he was charged with filing a false police report claiming that more than $10,000 in clothing, CDs, cash and stereo equipment were stolen from a car he borrowed from a local dealership.
Clarett unsuccessfully challenged the NFL’s rule that a player must be out of high school for three years to be eligible for the entry draft. He was drafted in 2005, but the Denver Broncos but released in August.
On Jan. 1, 2006, Clarett was charged with aggravated robbery after police said he flashed a gun at people outside a bar and robbed them of a cell phone. Then, on Aug. 9, 2006, Clarett was arrested in Columbus after he made an illegal u-turn and led police on a chase. After the chase ended, police discovered a loaded AK-47, two handguns and an open bottle of vodka.

Another Armed Repetition?
NBC 4: CPD said investigators think seven recent armed robberies, including two Thursday, were committed by the same suspect. Seven businesses have been robbed at gunpoint in less than a week, and CPD said it thinks a serial robber is behind all of the crimes. In fact, three robberies took place in one day, CPD said.
The first in the series happened last Friday at Starbucks coffee shop at 350 S. Third St. CPD said the same German Village coffee shop also was hit Thursday morning and by the same suspect. A male suspect entered the Starbucks coffee shop at 350 S. Third St. at about 6:10 a.m. Friday, June 13.
CPD said the suspect approached an employee, pointed a sawed-off shotgun at her and demanded cash. He fled the scene with cash from the register, police said. There were three robberies last Saturday: 7-Eleven convenience store at 2481 Petzinger Rd., a drug store at 2940 Groveport Rd. and a Certified station at 1093 Frank Rd.
A Marathon station at 1690 S. High St. was robbed Monday. Two more businesses were robbed Thursday morning: a Tee Jayes Country Place Restaurant at 1335 Parsons Ave. and the Starbucks on South Third Street. The details about the second robbery (on Thursday) at the coffee shop nearly were identical to the first. The only difference was the suspect was wearing a black wig instead of a knit cap.
The suspect was described as a white male who is between the ages of 30 and 35. He is between 5 feet 8 inches and 6 feet 1 inch tall. He weighs about 150 pounds and was described as “very skinny.”

NBC 4: CPD and the FBI continued to investigate an alleged abduction after a woman said she was kidnapped at gunpoint Wednesday. The woman said she was abducted at gunpoint from the area of Westwood and West 5th avenues. That’s on the city’s Northwest Side.
She said the suspect forced her to drive on Interstate 70. The suspect’s stated destination was Chicago, Ill., but the vehicle overheated in Vigo County, Ind. The suspect walked away from the disabled vehicle, she said, and she went to a residence and called the local police.
There was a massive manhunt with helicopters and bloodhounds Wednesday night, but the suspect was not apprehended, according to FBI’s Harry Trombitas. She said the incident took place between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The victim remained in Indiana as of noontime Thursday. The local FBI said it is working on a suspect sketch that should be available to the media before the weekend.
