Mozaic Scores With People

As previously stated, Mozaic could be a scrumptious scene… Another validation of the aforesaid was evident this evening… The venue’s staff is attentive and thorough… Their diligence toward minute aspects is complimented perfectly when the drink slingers address patrons…

Adam Proficient is the consummate employee… He appreciates his craft and consistently showcases this through his actions… Maria Social may possess the premiere personality in this city… You wish you could turn ten minutes of conversation into two hours…

As much as I covet crowds and energy, people are why venues are ventured into… Moziac comprehends this and their management, servers, and slingers are a platinum compilation…

Red White & Beautiful

10 TV: Clearing skies and warmer temperatures should bring a sense of summer back to Friday's weather. After an early morning low of 58, Friday will begin with overcast skies… Skies will clear during the afternoon, allowing the sun to warm temperatures to 80 degrees.

Conditions for the Red, White & Boom fireworks display Downtown appear to be ideal: great visibility and temperatures in the lower 70s… July 4 holiday will be sunny again, with a high of 81 degrees. The next chance of rain is not until late Sunday, and even the chances are low at just 20 percent.

Berry's case will now go to a county court… A felony charge would have carried with it a penalty of up to five years in jail and a $5,000 fine. Berry was considered one of Ohio State's biggest catches in the season's recruiting class. He was rated among the top running backs in the U.S. and was offered scholarships by 25 schools.

BREAKING: Park Street Patio, Sugar Bar Allege Status, Endure Rebukes

Frog Bear and Wild Boar will host the official Red White and Boom After Party. Park Street Patio and Sugar Bar’s promotional material entitled them as “The Official Boom Headquarters.” However, Frog Bear and Wild Boar is an official sponsor of the event. Park Street Patio and Sugar Bar have no official relationship with the event.

“As far as the Red White and Boom organizers are concerned, the Frog Bear & Wild Boar is the Official Red White & Boom After Party,” said Frog Bear and Wild Boar Promotions Superstar Jeff Smith. “We work closely with the organizing committee every year. No one else has rights to the title “Official Red White & Boom After Party” but us.”

Park Street Patio and Sugar Bar have been informed of the aforesaid, according to Red White and Boom Executive Director Michael Collins. This evening, Red White and Boom Director of Operations Shawn Verhoff expanded upon this. “Park Street and Sugar have no authorization to use the red, white and boom name,” he said.

“Anyone who wants to contradict this should call the organizing firm,” said Smith. “If you check the Red White and Boom website (redwhiteandboom.org) , you’ll notice that our activities are clearly listed on their website. The interlopers are not. I believe that says everything. Frog Bear and Wild Boar is Red White and Boom. Join us for our great party on the plaza (free for everyone), and the Reaganomics indoors after the show.”

Red White and Boom’s official sponsorship material, as well as the competing venue’s contradictory material is below. Park Street Patio or Sugar Bar refused comment concerning this story.

Thirteen is Progress?

NBC 4: The City of Columbus tore down a vacant home on Dakota Avenue Wednesday morning to cheers of local residents, however it is just one small piece of a much larger puzzle. So far in 2009, the city has torn down 13 abandoned homes, but Mayor Michael Coleman says there are 5,300 of them in the city.

Not all of the homes need torn down, as some can be refurbished, but the city budget continues to shrink for abandoned home demolition, being cut by about 50 percent each year. It costs approximately $12,000 to claim a home and demolish it. By the end of the year, the city will have torn down 19 homes—that’s all the money they have.

Express Premieres Shopping Paradise

Premieres are crucial. Before you reactively roll your eyes… Before your subconscious silently refrains that one never has a second chance to make a first impression, consider the obvious… Premieres commence the conversation… And maintaining the momentum of a positive initial act is much easier than executing a superior second act…

On Thursday, I attended the Express Polaris Grand Opening Gala. The event was exemplary. The fusion of clothes and cocktails, elegance and edge provided one of the most unique experiences ever witnessed within the Fashion Place… One’s ears noted chatter and mixed music, but your eyes never left the racks (and racks) of opulence.

While the men’s collection possesses greater consistency and versatility, the women’s collection asserts several highlights… Specifically, the cotton sateen tube dress ($79.50), the twist front dress ($49.50), and the ruffle trim voile top ($39.50)… Each are casual enough for an afternoon patio lunch, stylish enough for any venue evening…

The men’s collection, encapsulated within the argyle polo ($23.70), epitomizes the intersection of casual and style… Given our current climate, consumers covet one purchase for several settings… Assimilation is imperative… The argyle polo will conform into a lecture hall, a venue, or a restaurant and one will never question their fashion aptitude…

One will also never question the fashion aptitude of Express’ staff, whose intelligence and personalities are as enticing as their apparel… Enjoy a fifteen minute conversation with one of the platinum bunnies, you will simply be smarter… Enjoy a thirty minute conversation with one of them, you will be smarter and you will purchase a minimum of one hundred dollars…

I’ve never understood those who abhor shopping… How can one abhor shopping? How can one oppose eclectic conversations and personalities, platinum bunnies, and style improvement? If those referenced ever enter Express Polaris, their mindset will be eternally altered.

Ready, Waiting for Boom

NBC 4: Red, White and Boom! already claims the title as the largest fireworks display in the Midwest, and organizers say it will be even bigger and better this year. Crews began loading hundreds of fireworks shells into launch tubes Tuesday morning. The show will be launched from a fenced-off area behind Veterans Memorial Auditorium.

Planners began choreographing this year’s display even before last year’s show had finished clearing from the downtown sky. Coordinator Earl Burke says it takes a full year to prepare the soundtrack, design the show and program the launch computers. Designers were making last-minute changes to the show as late as Monday night.

This year’s display will include “nautical shells” that Burke says will explode just above the surface of the Scioto River in a burst of light and color, reflecting on the water. He promises the show will be very different from the year before. “Our idea is to top what we did the year before,” he says. “So we want everybody to come down here and say, ‘Wow! I didn’t see that before.‘“

Pyrotechnico of NewCastle, PA, will be launching the fireworks. The company recently won a gold medal in an international fireworks competition, beating teams from China and France. Some of the displays that helped win the competition appear in Red, White and Boom.

The show launches from three levels: the roof of Vets Memorial, the loading dock and the riverfront. Burke says it creates a 3D effect and helps highlight the downtown buildings. Burke says the best place to watch the display is in downtown Columbus because the outlying areas will only see the high, sky displays; they will miss the lower- and ground-level explosions.

Gum Vanishes & Gun Violence

10 TV: Authorities hope images from surveillance video can help them identify a woman who they believe has stolen several hundred dollars worth of chewing gum from the gift shop inside Nationwide Children's Hospital. According to police, the woman stole packs of gum from the gift shop three times in June… The thefts added up to more than $600, investigators said. Authorities said the woman wore the same clothes during each of the thefts. Anyone with information was asked to call Columbus police.

10 TV: Police said that they were searching for two armed masked men who broke into a west side apartment early Tuesday. The incident occurred at about 4 a.m. in the Ashton Square apartments, located in the 700 block of Countrybrook Drive… According to police, two men kicked in the back door of an apartment where a woman and her small child were inside. Police said that the men were looking for a specific person, who apparently did not live in the apartments. The woman who lives there said that the gunmen threatened her at gunpoint as they demanded to know the whereabouts of the person they were seeking. After pleading for several minutes, police said the men finally left the apartment.

10 TV: A woman apparently called 911 from inside a closet Tuesday after an armed man forced his way into her east side home. Police were called to a home on Bostwick Road at about 5:45 p.m… According to neighbors, the woman who lived in the home said a man armed with a shotgun forced his way inside.

Junior Achievement’s Green Request

Dear Supporter of Junior Achievement:

Kids all over central Ohio need your help! Please help JA of Central Ohio be green and recycle program kit materials. You will help schools (maybe even your own child's school!) have an age appropriate financial literacy program taught to them at a deeply discounted cost.

Stop by our office and see how easy it is to create a refurbished kit for kids all over central Ohio. Kits normally cost $500 each and we would like to be able to offer a refurbished kit for $150 to as many central Ohio schools as we can. Help us help students learn financial literacy.

Please pass this email along to others that may be interested in helping. Do you know a Boy Scout Troop or Girl Scout Troop that can earn credit by doing a good deed daily? Parents and teachers, wouldn't it be great for your child's class to have Junior Achievement in their classroom? By responding to this email, you can!

Kits do not have to be built at JA's office. You are welcome to take the materials home, to your next Girl Scout or Boy Scout meeting, or to any location you wish! We have approximately 30-40 kits to be built. Call today to reserve yours!

Yours in education,
Geri Huygen

Comfest Fatality Was Accidental

10 TV: Further investigation has revealed that the stabbing death of an Ohio University student at this past weekend's Community Festival was not criminal in nature, police said Monday. Police also said that Bryan Barbin's death is being ruled accidental by the Franklin County Coroner's Office, pending the completion of lab results.

Barbin,18, was stabbed multiple times Saturday evening at the festival known as ComFest. The three-day event is held annually at Goodale Park, located just north of downtown. Witnesses said they saw two people on the ground and it looked like they were wrestling…

Barbin, 18, was transported to Grant Medical Center, where he died shortly after midnight. Police detained and questioned a teenager who was with Barbin. Police later released him without pressing charges.

Escapees & Explosions

10 TV: A 13-year-old boy convicted of arson in a south side fire was taken into custody Monday after he escaped from a juvenile facility for the second time. According to firefighters, authorities arrested Ryan Parsley on Markison Avenue, located in South Columbus, at about 10:30 a.m. Earlier this month, Parsley pleaded guilty to helping set a Barthman Avenue home on fire in January… Parsley was placed on two years' probation and Franklin County Children's Services, which received custody of Parsley, assigned the boy to the New Horizon Youth Center, a secure residential treatment facility in the village of Bethesda in Belmont County in eastern Ohio. He escaped from that facility last week. Parsley had previously escaped from a Franklinton treatment center in March. He turned himself in a few weeks later.

NBC 4: Columbus fire and Columbus police were called out to the city’s far West Side before 5 a.m. Monday morning. Seven vehicles were destroyed by fire at four locations; four fires were set in vehicles, but three other vehicles were damaged by proximity to the flames. The first fire was on the 2000 block of Jarrow Court. Shortly after, two vehicles were on fire at a home on the 5800 block of Trailwater Lane. The third vehicle fire was at a home on the 2000 block of Jeffey Drive. The fourth fire was on the 5700 block of Rachel Court.

Columbus Zoo Director Dies

10 TV: The executive director of the Columbus Zoo died suddenly Sunday night. Jeff Swanagan, who came to the zoo last year after running the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, apparently suffered a heart attack at home.... Swanagan was 51.

Swanagan was an Ohio native and Ohio State University graduate who started his career at the Columbus Zoo in 1979 before leaving for Zoo Atlanta in the 1980s. He eventually served as the deputy director of Zoo Atlanta, and he oversaw the Florida Aquarium and Georgia Aquarium during their start-up years.

Death Dulls Comfest Weekend

NBC 4: Conflicting reports are being made as to how an 18-year-old man died at Comfest this weekend. At about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Columbus police were dispatched to Goodale Park for a disturbance call.

According to Sgt. Rich Weiner, upon arrival, officers spotted two people, one covered in blood, the other nearby and held for questioning. Weiner said a knife was recovered, and witnesses were also questioned.

The victim, 18-year-old Bryan Barbin, suffered four to five stab wounds and later died from his injuries at Grant Medical Center.

According to Columbus police radio dispatchers, officers were questioning a “suspect” a short time after the incident. However, as of 9:20 p.m. Sunday, no charges or arrests have been made. At 5 p.m. Sunday, a Columbus police officer spoke to NBC 4‘s Matt Alvarez in an off-camera interview and told him the victim’s stab wounds were self-inflicted and officials aren’t sure how the stabbing occurred.

You Have Questions... I Have Answers

Since Gossip Cbus began, I’ve been swamped with e-mail (thanks for the love)… While I’ve tried to give individual responses to several, I also know that some of the questions are questions others may have and thus, answering them publicly would be better… Therefore, from time to time, I will answer questions where everyone can see them…

Q: I’ve heard several rumors concerning your week away? Can you explain your absence?
A: Our previous post is an explanation. No additional statement will be issued.

Q: Red White and Boom is this city’s signature evening. How will you cover it?
A: Red White and Boom is this city’s most anticipated and spectacular event… We will have an announcement on Monday (June 29)…

Q: I’m a follower of yours on twitter and I noticed you’re approaching your 5,000th tweet… Anything special planned?
A: As with previous milestones, Gossip CBUS will have an announcement. We anticipate crossing our 5,000th post amidst Red White and Boom.
