10 TV: Clearing skies and warmer temperatures should bring a sense of summer back to Friday's weather. After an early morning low of 58, Friday will begin with overcast skies… Skies will clear during the afternoon, allowing the sun to warm temperatures to 80 degrees.
Conditions for the Red, White & Boom fireworks display Downtown appear to be ideal: great visibility and temperatures in the lower 70s… July 4 holiday will be sunny again, with a high of 81 degrees. The next chance of rain is not until late Sunday, and even the chances are low at just 20 percent.

Another Robbery & Ridiculous Weather
10 TV: The FBI said that it was searching for the man who robbed a Short North bank on Monday afternoon. According to investigators, a man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt entered First Community Bank, located at 647 North High St., at about 2:11 p.m. Police said that the man walked straight up to a teller where he demanded money. The man kept his hand inside his sweatshirt as though he had a weapon. None was seen but police said that the teller complied and gave the robber money from his drawer. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbus Police Robbery Squad at 614-645-4665 or the FBI at 614-744-2168.

Temperatures could cause damage to vegetation. Spring-like temperatures have fallen off the radar -- at least for the time being. Tuesday's early morning low will drop to 28 degrees, and occasional snow showers may leave a coating in some parts of central and southern Ohio… It will remain cold Tuesday, with the possibility of an occasional snow or rain shower. Expect daytime highs to only reach 36 degrees. Freeze watches are in effect for Tuesday night into early Wednesday, when low temperatures are again expected to dip below freezing… we'll begin to warm up on Wednesday, with partly sunny skies and temperatures reaching 48 degrees. We should be back into the 60s by the weekend.

Events take place Friday through Sunday, with events taking place at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Veterans Memorial, Nationwide Arena and the Ohio Expo Center. According to the city, Vine Street will temporarily be made one-way westbound between North High Street and Park Street. Left turns from southbound Wall Street to Vine Street will be prohibited. A cold front moves into Ohio Sunday for the start of Daylight Savings Time. Highs drop from the 60s back into the 50s, but lows at night will remain above freezing.

Snafu & Snow
NBC 4: The Franklin County Elections Board quickly verified the issues and candidates that are qualified to appear on the May Primary ballot. It will take a little longer to replace some polling places that are now not usable because the City of Columbus closed them. The thirteen recreation centers the city closed in a budget cutting measure this month all represent at least one polling place. With those spots off limits, other handicapped accessible places must be found. The new voting locations must be found and voters notified of the change of location in advance of the May 5th election.
The city closes recreation centers to save money, but their budget solution actually creates another problem…
10 TV: Snow will spread into Ohio overnight and early Saturday, with a light accumulation along and north of Interstate 70, according to Live Doppler 10 meteorologist Chris Bradley. Overnight low temperatures will drop to 21 degrees. Models are trending toward a warmer high temperature on Saturday, and that means more of a mix to freezing rain or rain in the Columbus area, Bradley said. Snowfall accumulations will be light in the Columbus area, with a slushy inch possible.
Can’t the snow just go away and stay away?

NBC 4: Columbus police said a robbery led to a homicide overnight Thursday. Patrol officers were dispatched to Stevens Avenue on the city’s near West Side on a reported break-in at about midnight Thursday. When officers arrived, they entered a residence in the 30 block and found 30-year-old Randy Frisby upstairs. CPD said Frisby suffered from blunt force trauma to his body. A Columbus fire medic responded and pronounced Frisby dead at 12:15 a.m.
Number thirty-eight (since we started counting) is this city’s thirteenth murder of 2009…
10 TV: Sunny conditions Friday will lead to slushy conditions on Valentine's Day. After an early morning low of 29 degrees, Friday's temperature will rise to 45 degrees with increasing clouds… Valentine's Day on Saturday will see a mix of rain and snow. Any accumulation will be under an inch, with highs approaching 39 degrees.
Snow on Valentine’s Day?

NBC 4: Police said a man robbed a north side pharmacy at gunpoint Thursday night. The man walked into the CVS Pharmacy, located at 7470 Sawmill Road, near Hard Road, at about 10:25 p.m. and went to the pharmacy, police said. He jumped over the counter, pulled out a gun and demanded specific drugs from the pharmacist… The pharmacist complied and the man fled through the store's drive-through window. Police described the man as white, 20 to 25 years old and 5 feet 7 inches tall. He has a thin build and was wearing an orange hooded sweatshirt.
And the count goes on (number thirty-five)…
10 TV: The city announced the next round of layoffs on Friday... Six employees, including one part-time and five full-time employees, were expected to be let go… Two of the impacted employees are supervisors and four are assistants.
Mayor Coleman’s list… Cut Police – Check. Cut City Workers – Check. Build worthless park with other people’s money – Double check.
NBC 4: In an effort to balance the city’s 2009 budget, officials released Friday the final list of recreation centers that would be closed, effective Feb. 14. Barack, Feddersen, Glenwood, Holton, Indian Mound, Krumm, Martin Janis, Sawyer, Sullivant Gardens, Tuttle, Performing Arts Center…
The good news? In two years, children will have a crime invested downtown park to replace these rec centers…
10 TV: A warm front will move across the Ohio Valley on Saturday, kicking up the winds and bringing more cloud cover. We may have to dodge a few sprinkles, but temperatures will be near 60 degrees near the Ohio River, and in the 50s for the rest of us. On Sunday, we will see very light rain showers and the winds will turn north, cooling us a bit. It will remain mild, with highs reaching 43 degrees. Monday looks nice and warm, but rain will be on the way Tuesday and Wednesday.
For fifty degrees, we can live with rain…

It’s What We Call the News
WSYX 6: Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman and City Council are hammering out the last $7 million to trim from an already thin budget in Columbus. This city has already gone through some drastic cuts in preparation for this upcoming budget - a budget that had to be trimmed about $100-million. So far, around 400 city employees were told they're position is vanishing. That includes more than 25 police recruits. More than a dozen centers, mostly rec centers, are closing in the next few weeks as the parks department funding was slashed. The city is also no longer funding the Sister Cities program at the visitors center. They've also pulled the plug on the Summer Strike Force.
Only $7 Million to cut? Maybe Mayor Coleman should issue a mandatory layoff for left-handed redheads…
10 TV: A Downtown hotel was placed under partial lockdown Monday morning as police searched for a gunman. No gunman was found… Police were called to the hotel around 5:30 a.m. on report of a gunman on the fifth floor. The hotel's elevators were disabled as police searched the hotel's fifth and sixth floors. After roughly 45 minutes of searching, police were unable to find a gunman and cleared the scene. Anxious guests were finally able to leave their floors and check out.
10 TV: Five north side schools were placed under lockdown Monday morning after student reported seeing another student with a gun inside a high school. Brookhaven High School and nearby Maize Road Elementary School were placed under lockdown at about 10 a.m. Three Catholic schools -- St. Francis DeSales High School, St. James The Less and St. Matthias - were also placed under lockdown as a precaution… The lockdowns occurred after a student who rides a COTA bus told administrators that he saw another student with a gun walk inside Brookhaven High School. The student who allegedly had the gun was later apprehended at a garage near the high school.... No weapon was found, but police did confirm that a magazine was recovered during a search of the area. All school lockdowns were lifted shortly before 11 a.m.
If anyone wonders why we spend so much time on crime, the above examples should show you… It’s everywhere…
10 TV: A clipper system will push through the region Tuesday, bringing with it the chance for some snow showers. Little accumulation is expected… After an early morning low of 23, Tuesday's high will reach only 27 degrees… mostly cloudy on Wednesday, with a few leftover snow flurries. It will be colder, with highs only reaching 20 degrees. Temperatures will rise dramatically by the end of the week, with temperatures on Saturday in the 40s and Sunday in the 50s. The warmer weather, however, may be accompanied by rain showers.

Blizzard & Budgeting
10 TV: All city employees that do not wear a uniform to work will face a five-day mandatory layoff, Mayor Michael Coleman announced Wednesday. Coleman, who unveiled the plan during a news conference, said the move will save the city about $1.6 million... In addition to ordering temporary layoffs, Coleman also announced that 12 union employees will be laid off. The mayor did not elaborate about who would be laid off, but he said top level management would be impacted. Leaders said the layoffs would save the city an additional $500,000. The mayor said that additional cuts could be made in coming weeks.
This city (like a lot of others in this country) is facing a budget disaster… Coleman’s response feels like nitpicking…
10 TV: Some areas north of Columbus reported snowfall amounts totaling 8-10 inches on Wednesday… the Columbus-metro area received about 4 inches of snow during Wednesday's storm. Wednesday night should be relatively quiet, with clear skies and overnight temperatures dropping to 16 degrees… clouds will increase again on Thursday, and we could see some snow showers during the evening hours. Daytime highs will reach 25 degrees. Snow showers will come to an end on Friday, with 1-2 inches of accumulation possible by the day's end.
Hope you stayed inside today with some coco and Gossip CBUS…

Wages, Weather Ruin City…
NBC 4: Columbus police announced the layoffs Tuesday of the police recruit class scheduled to graduate this week. According to the Department of Public Safety, 27 recruits were notified of the layoffs as part of ongoing budget cuts. The recruits were scheduled to graduate Friday. The mayor’s office is faced with making $13 million in cuts before passing a balanced budget, and city officials said they expect to save $1.2 million with the recruiting cuts.
Sources had indicated this would occur… Still, given the violent crime increase, the impact is no less severe…
10 TV: A winter storm warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. for Franklin county… Snow will mix with sleet and freezing rain overnight. The wintry precipitation will change back to all snow early on Wednesday morning. Then, the snow will taper off on Wednesday afternoon… freezing rain overnight has been eating into the total snow accumulation, especially south of Columbus, but the precipitation will switch back to heavy snow around 8 a.m. Wednesday. Up to an inch of ice may accumulate before the snow returns. Temperatures will remain steady in the mid 20s throughout the storm, which will continue through late Wednesday afternoon. Skies should clear Wednesday night, but snow showers may reappear late Thursday, bringing perhaps as much as an inch of accumulation. A high of 24 degrees is expected on Thursday.
Everyone be careful out there… We are remaining indoors…

NBC 4: At the council meeting Tuesday night, a motion was made to vote on Eileen Paley as a new council member… Paley, a lawyer and member of the Columbus Civil Service Commission was voted in on a 3-2 vote. Troy Miller, owner of ATM Central Development, was also voted in by three yes votes.
If you’ve been following the back and fourth on this (NBC 4 has had excellent coverage), you know it’s gotten nasty… I know politics is always a fight… But, seriously… over two council seats?
NBC 4: The Columbus Division of Police are currently investigating the latest robbery that happened this morning inside the Kroger on Solando Blvd. Reports say a black female approached the teller and demanded money. The suspect alleged there was a bomb in the trash can that would be “activated if the teller did not comply”. The teller handed over an undetermined amount of cash. The suspect then approached a second teller demanding more money. The suspect then fled the store. She is described as a black female, 28-30 years old, 5’9”-6’tall, 170-190 lbs with shoulder-length dark hair with streaks of blonde mixed in. Police are asking if you have any information, to call (614) 645-4666.
Another one I technically cant count (no injuries)… But, it was worth a mention…
10 TV: Expect more snow and continued cold on Wednesday…. The Columbus metro area could receive up to 2 inches of snowfall. High temperatures on Wednesday will reach 22 degrees. Snow flurries will stick around through Thursday. It will be very cold, with daytime highs only reaching 11 degrees.

WSYX6: A shooting leads to a standoff involving Columbus SWAT in West Columbus. Police say a man was visiting friends at a home in the 900 block of Sullivant Avenue when he started firing shots out of a second-floor window. One man was hit in the back was taken to a local hospital. The suspect later barricaded himself inside a home for just over an hour. The surrendered without incident around 11:15pm.
Technically, I cant count this in our series, as no one was actually hurt… Still, this incident paints a scary picture…
10 TV: Police have arrested two men who they said used personal information belonging to Columbus City School employees to rent cars, open credit card accounts and book hotel rooms… According to detectives, Carl Lowe and John Lent were arrested last week on unrelated warrants at a home on East 6th Avenue. During their arrests, the men allegedly told police about the fraud scheme involving district employees. Police said the men had stolen employee information either through the mail or from the Columbus City Schools' district office....

10 TV: The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory from 4 a.m. Tuesday through 1 a.m. Wednesday… A wind chill advisory is also in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 6 a.m. Wednesday. Low pressure and an arctic cold front moving through late Monday night and Tuesday will cause snow to spread west to east over the area late Monday night. By the time the snow tapers to flurries later Tuesday, most areas should see 2 to 3 inches of new accumulation. Windy conditions will develop Tuesday, causing areas of blowing snow which may reduce visibility to near zero at times as winds gust 35 to 40 mph. Another front will move across the area on Wednesday, with more snow and even colder readings. Highs will rise to 23 degrees.
I cannot say this enough… I HATE THIS WEATHER.

10 TV: A robbery suspect was returned to jail Sunday night after briefly escaping from custody by jumping out a hospital window. Maxwell Stevenson, 31, was naked when he jumped from a window at Grant Medical Center. He landed on the roof of the hospital's second floor. Officers said they needed a Taser to stop him.
He jumped onto a roof naked and his next move was what? If criminals are going to attempt an escape, they should really have a plan…
10 TV: Crime Stoppers announced on Sunday that it is offering a $2,000 reward leading police to the person who shot a store clerk on Dec. 27. The gunman is described as a black man in his early 20s.
He is between 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall, with a thin build, weighing between 165 to 170 pounds. He was wearing a black or blue bandanna over his face, a dark jacket or hooded sweatshirt, and carried a black semi-automatic handgun. His hair was pulled back into a small ponytail. Police said he was possibly driving a late 1980s Ford Escort-looking vehicle with the driver's side window missing, and was covered with plastic. It had a loud muffler and the color appeared to be black, gray and silver in a camouflage pattern. The reward is valid for information received by Jan. 21 leading to the arrest or indictment of the person responsible. Lose The Delusion
Mayor Coleman… Instead of begging for a train no one will use, why don’t you actually take care of the roads, which everyone uses?
10 TV: Live Doppler 10 chief meteorologist Chris Bradley said we will likely see a mix of snow, freezing rain and sleet on Saturday. Bradley said the best chance for snowfall will come after 10 a.m., with some precipitation becoming heavy at times. The Columbus-area will likely receive 2-4 inches of snow. Bradley said the storm system will push out of central Ohio by Sunday. Expect partly sunny skies and daytime temperatures approaching 30 degrees.
NBC 4: Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman is asking for $200 million from the federal government to build a 13-mile light rail system in Columbus as part of a $334.5 million economic stimulus package funding request. In a letter sent to President-elect Barack Obama last week, Coleman said his proposal would integrate the best elements of the 2006 North Corridor Light Rail Plan and the downtown streetcar plan. The proposed light rail system would stretch through the Short North, The Ohio State University campus and past Polaris Parkway.

Rain, Rain, Go Away
10 TV: Freezing rain and sleet will overspread the region from the southwest late tonight into Tuesday. The precipitation may briefly start out mixing with snow. Freezing rain falling on very cold ground will result in ice accumulations of one to two tenths of an inch.
Temperatures will gradually warm Tuesday, but may remain below freezing or just at freezing through the afternoon. The ice accumulation will result in hazardous travel conditions, especially on untreated roads, bridges and overpasses.
Rain could freeze late Monday night into Tuesday morning. Untreated surfaces could become icy. Any ice accumulation is expected to be less than 1/4 inch, so a major ice storm is not expected.
Untreated roads and walk ways could become icy. Ice accumulations should be less than 1/4 inch. Allow extra time for travel on Tuesday, especially Tuesday morning. Surface temperatures should be at freezing, or slightly above, by Tuesday afternoon.
Live Doppler 10 chief meteorologist Chris Bradley said in Columbus, skies will be clear on Monday evening, with overnight lows dropping to 24 degrees. Rain will move into central Ohio during the early morning hours on Tuesday, with a mix of snow, freezing rain and rain developing after 8 a.m.
Bradley said that areas to the north of Columbus will have a better chance for snow, while areas to the south will see mainly sleet and freezing rain. Most precipitation will turn to rain during the afternoon hours as temperatures approach 36 degrees. Another round of snowfall will be possible on Wednesday. We'll hit our daytime high of 38 degrees early, with temperatures falling throughout the day.

The Weather… Fiscal & Otherwise…
10 TV: Gov. Ted Strickland on Friday ordered an additional $640 million in spending cuts as the state continues to try and head off a growing shortfall in the state's budget. So far this year, the state has made $1.9 billion in cuts… State officials previously said that Ohio's upcoming two-year budget, which begins in July, could fall as much as $7.3 billion in the red. The current two-year budget is projected to have a shortfall of $640 million.
So… General Motors and Chrysler got a check and no one drives their cars… Can Ohio get a check, because some people actually live here…
10 TV: Live Doppler 10 chief meteorologist Chris Bradley said temperatures will begin to drop on Friday evening. A leftover rain shower will be possible. It will be windy during the overnight hours, with temperatures dropping to 28 degrees. Saturday will be partly to mostly cloudy, with daytime temperatures reaching 33 degrees. Bradley said a wintry mix will develop after dark. Expect precipitation to turn to mostly snow by late Saturday night.
Could Bradley define after dark please, because some of us have nightlife to enjoy…
