Ohio State Commits Minor Infractions

NBC 4: The Ohio State University committed more than one out of every three NCAA level one violations in the Big Ten conference during the 2007-08 school year, accounting for 13 of 34 total level one violations that typically deal with recruiting mistakes.

The football program was cited for two recruiting violations—both pertained to Assistant Coach Dick Tressel having inadvertent contact with prospects. Head Coach Jim Tressel was present during one of the secondary violations.

The men’s basketball program was cited for two recruiting-related violations. One violation was for hosting the parents of a recruit in a hotel room. NCAA bylaws do not allow parents to receive such benefits. Another violation related only to a university policy, not an NCAA policy, when a recruit stayed out past a 2 a.m. curfew.

Doug Archie, OSU associate athletics director for compliance, said the violations reflect that the school is paying attention to the rule and self-reporting when there is an issue. Archie characterized the program’s 26 total violations as minor mistakes.

Siena Breaks Buckeyes Hearts

Sports are the greatest relationship. Our chosen squads provide priceless memories, monumental moments, interludes of exuberance and ecstasy… However, as with any relationship, our chosen squads will also break our hearts…

As I walked the concrete under the glimmer of South Campus Gateway, I feared that with finals concluded and Spring Break beckoning, McFadden’s crowd would resemble pre-New Year’s Eve, when approximately twelve people inhabited the venue… Thankfully, my fears remained unrealized… Both bars were stacked with students, who despite the allure of warmer weather, had remained to cheer their Buckeyes into the second round (hopefully)…

Also remaining in the city (thankfully) was McFadden’s promotions superstar Amy, whose eighteen carat smile was the perfect commencement to the evening… We discussed where I’ve been (apparently, it had been awhile)… St. Patrick’s Day weekend, the crowds, and the 2009 Gossip Awards (she has agreed to be a presenter)… I know mentioned Amy previously… However, I have never done her exquisiteness justice… She is a platinum bunny…

After ten minutes of conversation with Amy, I walked the two flights of stairs into the somewhat relaxed atmosphere of the first half… As the Buckeyes and Siena swapped buckets, neither impressing upon me that either could dominate, the respective sets of eyes lining the bar darted from their conversations to the screen and back… Clearly, they were interested, but the Buckeyes 28-23 halftime edge did not enthrall them…The crowd was also unique in contrast to any previous McFadden’s cluster… As best surmised in the assertion of Lucky Charm Allie (another delicious addition to the Lucky Charms), the majority of the crowd didn’t know what happy hour was… Yes, there were bunnies, an impressive collection of which entered carrying their Coach purses, but there were also hoards you expect at other venues… Marlo Stanfield and a princess… A gaggle of heifers… It was a random evening…

Less random was Ohio State’s stellar commencement to the second half… The Buckeyes ripped off a 15-4 shred, which vaulted them into a 41-30 lead with under fourteen minutes remaining… The crowd’s conversations continued undistracted, only now, the conversations concerned a second round match-up with the Louisville Cardinals… Even when Sienna sliced the lead to 41-34, everyone continued discussing the Cardinals…

Presumption will thwart you every moment… Siena cut the advantage to 41-37, 41-39, and 45-43, but the Buckeyes continued dropping triples at a rate that retained our confidence… As a source informed me that Woody had been fired as McFadden’s lead security person (apparently, it has been awhile since I was there), Siena racked a 6-0 run to knot the contest at 49-49. Evan Turner scored again to reinstate Ohio State’s advantage at 55-51… However, Siena was restored… They dropped a triple to cut the lead to 56-55 and ultimately sent the contest into overtime at 56-56.

Siena continued to own the momentum, rushing to a 60-56 advantage at the outset of the extra session… Fortunately, Jon Diebler buried a triple, B.J. Mullins scored, and Turner dropped a pair of free throws to place Ohio State on the cusp… 60-59 with eight seconds remaining… At this moment, a drunken moron committed the unforgivable sin… “Watch, they’ll throw it in at the buzzer” were his exact words… (Guess what happened)…

After Siena and Turner traded three point trips at the second overtime’s commencement, Turner tallied a pair of free throws to move Ohio State ahead 72-71. Siena then netted a triple to assume a 74-72 lead with nine seconds remaining… The drunken moron could have said anything he wanted… The slipper had been fitted, boxed, and sold… Ohio State’s season was over…

As the inevitable screams came from the DJ of “O-H-I-O” and “F$%# Siena” and the music blared… It took me a moment to surmise the mood of McFadden’s… Then, as I watched the crowd listlessly dance without energy or passion, as I head them make nary a sound when the DJ implored them, I realized… Energy, passion, and sound are difficult to manufacture when your heart is broken…

Buckeyes Drop Title Tilt, Bag Eighth Seed

10 TV: Ohio State's men's basketball team learned Sunday that it will take on No. 9 seed Siena in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Dayton on Friday. The Buckeyes (22-10) were named the No. 8 seed in the Midwest region. The game time is approximately 9:40 p.m.

Less than one hour before the pairings were announced, the Buckeyes were defeated by Purdue, 65-61, in the Big Ten Tournament's championship game. Siena (26-7) is considered a sleeper team by many college basketball experts. The Saints won the MAAC conference last week by defeating Niagara. Four of their losses came against Tennessee, Oklahoma State, Pittsburgh and Kansas.

If the Buckeyes win on Friday, they would likely collide with tournament No. 1 seed Louisville. The Cardinals will take on the winner of Tuesday's play-in game between Alabama State and Morehead State. No No. 1 seed has ever lost to a No. 16 seed in the tournament's history.

Buckeyes Bounce Spartans, Will Play Purdue For Big Ten Title

10 TV: Evan Turner had 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists as Ohio State shocked seventh-ranked Michigan State with an 82-70 win in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament.

Jon Diebler had 17 points and five boards while William Buford added 14 points and nine boards for the Buckeyes (22-9), who will play Purdue in Sunday's final. Ohio State won this tournament in 2002 and 2007.

Kalin Lucas had 17 points while Korie Lucious added 16 points off the bench for the Spartans (26-6), who have not been to the final game since winning back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000. The loss could end Michigan State's hope for a top seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Buckeyes Best Badgers, Score Big Ten Semi-Finals

10 TV: Evan Turner netted 19 points and hit the go-ahead bucket in the final minute, as the Ohio State Buckeyes edged the Wisconsin Badgers, 61-57, in quarterfinal action of the Big Ten Tournament at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Jeremie Simmons was the only other Buckeye in double figures with 10 points. William Buford added nine for fifth-seeded Ohio State (21-9), which has won four of five and moves on to face top seed Michigan State in the semifinals on Saturday.

Trevon Hughes and Jason Bohannon netted 15 and 13 points, respectively, for fourth-seeded Wisconsin (19-12), the defending tourney champs and winners of seven of nine coming in. Ohio State scored the final seven points of the opening half, as Buford's three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer gave the Buckeyes a slim 29-28 edge.

It went back-and-forth the entire second half and Wisconsin appeared to pull away when Bohannon's trey in the corner capped a 10-2 run for a 54-47 advantage with six minutes left. The lead was short-lived, though, as the Buckeyes made their way to the foul line to inch closer, eventually taking a 55-54 lead when Jon Diebler drilled a trifecta with 2:25 remaining.

Marcus Landry proceeded to make 1-of-2 from the stripe to tie the game on the next possession, but Turner answered with a go-ahead score, spinning into the lane and getting his layup to fall with 53 seconds remaining. Landry was short on a three from the corner at the other end, and after P.J. Hill added another free throw for OSU, Bohannon was off the mark from long range to end any chance at a repeat Big Ten champion.

Spartans Sweep Ohio State

Remember when the Buckeyes were 9-0 and everyone had dreams of a deep tournament run? Making the tournament now would be a dream come true…

Durrell Summers had 26 points to almost double his career high, Kalin Lucas came off the bench for 20 and the Spartans dominated the boards on Sunday to beat Ohio State 78-67. "As you can imagine, it's a big win against a quality opponent on the road, especially after coming off that devastating loss last Wednesday," coach Tom Izzo said of a stunning 70-64 defeat to Northwestern that ended an 11-game winning streak and a string of 28 straight home wins.

Summers, who was averaging 8.0 points a game and had never made more than two 3-pointers in a game, was an unlikely hero. He got the start only because Izzo held Lucas and Chris Allen out of the starting lineup because they hadn't met some academic goals. The sophomore played like he belonged, hitting 8-of-13 shots from the field including 6-of-9 3-pointers and all four of his free throws.

The Spartans (16-3, 6-1) also took 15 more shots from the field, thanks to a 35-19 rebounding advantage. They scored 19 points off the offensive boards, where they had almost as many rebounds (16) as the Buckeyes did at both ends. "I always preach attacking the glass and sometimes it pays bigger dividends than others," Izzo said. "Today was one of those games where it definitely helped us, especially down the stretch."

It’s Basketball Season… And Michigan Still Sucks

Given the fact that this game took place at 8:00 on a Saturday… I’m guessing not a lot of people were watching… Still, it’s a victory over Michigan…

Ohio State's youthful regulars grew up a little Saturday night, just in time to help the Buckeyes upset their Big Ten rivals Sophomore Evan Turner scored 19 points and freshmen William Buford and B.J. Mullens each added 15 to help the Buckeyes beat Michigan (No. 24 ESPN/USA Today, No. 25 AP) 65-58, spoiling the Wolverines' celebration of their 1988-89 national championship team. Each of the trio scored during a 10-0 run in the final five minutes that broke a 47-all tie and gave Ohio State (13-3, 3-2) the lead for good.

Spartans Spank Buckeyes

My Saturday questions have been answered… We were obviously not as good as our start and we were overachieving (anyone dispute that with three losses in four games?)…

Michigan State made five 3-pointers in less than 3 minutes, making up for what was otherwise a lackluster performance. Kalin Lucas scored six of his 20 points on 3-pointers during the first-half barrage that gave the Spartans the lead for a good in a 67-58 win over Ohio State on Tuesday night.

Michigan State has won eight straight since being routed by North Carolina and 26 in a row at home, dating to a loss against Ohio State nearly two years ago… Ohio State's William Buford scored 17, B.J. Mullens had 16 points and Turner added 14. The Buckeyes (10-3, 1-2) have lost three of four after starting 9-0, hurting without their most experienced player, David Lighty, who is out with a broken foot.

Gophers Gouge Buckeyes

After starting 9-0, we have now lost 2 of 3… Were we that good? Were we really just overachieving? Michigan State (Tuesday night) will answer those questions…

This is the way coach Tubby Smith wanted Minnesota to rebound. Three days after a humbling defeat to 10th-ranked Michigan State, the Gophers got another chance against a Top 25 team. They went after the ball with gusto, got their shots to fall, and sent an outhustled Ohio State home furious.

Lawrence Westbrook led a typically balanced offense with 15 points, and No. 21 Minnesota salvaged a split in the opening week of Big Ten play by beating the 24th-ranked Buckeyes 68-59 on Saturday.

The Gophers (13-1, 1-1) went 8-for-20 from 3-point range; Westbrook was 3-for-5. The lack of pressure on the shooters, plus the occasional lapse that left a would-be dunker wide open on a backdoor cut, had the Buckeyes (10-2, 1-1) steamed.

Dearly missing junior guard David Lighty, his contagious energy and his 10 points per game, Ohio State made a late charge but trailed by seven or more for the last 16 minutes. Guard Jon Diebler had 15 points and five steals for Ohio State, but the Gophers held a 42-30 rebounding advantage after getting destroyed on the boards against the Spartans. Damian Johnson had 12 points and six rebounds for Minnesota.

Mountaineers Maul Buckeyes

You knew the winning streak had to end… but like this…and to West Virginia? Disgusting!

Alex Ruoff had 17 points as the West Virginia Mountaineers dominated the 15th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes, 76-48, at Value City Arena. Da'Sean Butler had 16 points and six rebounds while Darryl Bryant added 11 points for the Mountaineers (10-2), who have won four straight.

"It's nice to play well here," said West Virginia coach Bob Huggins. "I have tons of friends and family who were at this game and have spent the majority of my life here. We needed to play hard against a very good basketball team today. I have wonderful kids that play hard and these kids do what they need to do to win games."

William Buford and Jeremie Simmons each had 11 points for the Buckeyes (9-1), who lost their first game of the season and had a 12- game unbeaten streak at home stopped. "We weren't very good, it's just that simple," said Ohio State coach Thad Matta. "West Virginia had a lot to do with it. We couldn't capitalize on the momentum and really let our guard down on defense. After we went up early in the first, they got their big run and that was it for us."

Trailing early in the first half, the Mountaineers scored 11 unanswered points and held a 14-8 lead on Wellington Smith's jumper a bit over six minutes in. The game remained tight over the next several minutes, but West Virginia was able to slowly build on its lead and Butler nailed a jumper right before the buzzer to give West Virginia a 35-28 lead after 20 minutes.

The Buckeyes kept the score tied in the first several minutes of the second half and trailed by only seven points, 45-38, after Simmons put in a layup. However, the Mountaineers took control of the game as Devin Ebanks countered with a jumper to spark a 13-2 run and the team held a 58-40 lead on Bryant's jumper with a bit over 10 minutes to play. After Buford the bleeding with a pair of free throws, but West Virginia scored the next eight points and held a 66-42 advantage after Kevin Jones put in a jumper with under seven minutes to play.

Seven For Seven

Ok, I know the opponent the Jacksonville… But, 7-0 is 7-0

David Lighty had 21 points to lead No. 17 Ohio State to an 81-68 victory over Jacksonville on Wednesday night. Ohio State (7-0) led by 19 points early in the second half only to see the lead cut to five with 5 minutes left. Jon Diebler hit his third 3-pointer for the Buckeyes, and the Dolphins never got closer. The Buckeyes finished 10-of-17 from beyond the arc (59 percent). Evan Turner scored 17 points, Diebler added 14 and Jeremie Simmons had 10 for the Buckeyes.

6-0! Buckeyes Beat Butler

They are ranked twenty-first. They are undefeated. And it’s not like they are playing Iona… Sadly, I am assuming their game crowds resemble the crowd at McFadden’s last night

Evan Turner scored a team-high 14 points, including the go-ahead basket with 3:07 left as 21st-ranked Ohio State edged Butler, 54-51. David Lighty poured in 10 points and had eight rebounds, while Dallas Lauderdale scored nine points and grabbed eight boards for Ohio State (6-0), which was coming off a 67-62 win over Notre Dame on December 6. Jon Diebler contributed eight points and Jeremie Simmons had seven in the win.

With the Buckeyes holding a 29-23 lead after one half, the hosts continued to play front-runner and extended its advantage to 43-30 after a pair of free throws by Lauderdale with 4:20 into the second half. However, Butler got three-pointer by Hayward and a layup by Howard to make it a 50-48 game with 4:40 to go. After Turner made one of two from the free-throw line, Hayward's trey from the corner tied the contest at 51-51 with 3:58 remaining.

Turner's jumper with just over three minutes to play put the Buckeyes up by two and after he missed the front end of a one-and-one from the charity stripe, Lighty was unable to knock down a pair from the line with 1:54 to play. Butler went cold from the field in the closing minutes and one-of-two by Lauderdale put OSU up 54-51 with 1:02 left. Following a Turner miss with 11 seconds to play, the Bulldogs grabbed the rebound and called a timeout with 9.7 ticks remaining to draw up a final play. Hayward's three-point attempt from the left side was off the mark and the Buckeyes held on for the three- point win.

Buckeyes Nix Notre Dame, Now 5-0!!!

I know everyone is focused on finals, the weather, and where the football Buckeyes will spend their holidays… But, we may want to start paying attention to our hoopsters… 5-0… They defeated two ranked teams in one week, including a top ten team today, and on paper, the Big 10 doesn’t appear that tough… This could be a special year…

Evan Turner scored a career-high 28 points Saturday and Ohio State spoiled Luke Harangody's return to the lineup with a 67-62 victory over No. 7 Notre Dame, the unbeaten Buckeyes' second straight upset of a ranked opponent.

Harangody, the Big East player of the year last season, missed the past two games with pneumonia. He led Notre Dame (6-2) with 25 points and 16 rebounds, but Ohio State (5-0) took a 30-28 lead at halftime and built the margin to as many as 10 points in the second half.

A 3-pointer by Tory Jackson pulled Notre Dame within 63-62 with 26 seconds to go, but Turner and Jeremie Simmons hit two free throws each in the closing seconds. Freshman B.J. Mullens added a season-high 11 points for the Buckeyes, who were coming off a 73-68 upset at No. 21 Miami. Jackson added 13 points for the Irish.

Buckeyes Score Upset

NBC 4: A slap to the face was just what struggling Ohio State needed. The contact during a scrum Tuesday night prompted the ejection of Miami Hurricanes scoring leader Jack McClinton, and the Buckeyes went on to erase a 14-point second-half deficit and beat the 21st-ranked Hurricanes 73-68. Sophomore Jon Diebler scored a career-high 20 points and Evan Turner had 19 for the Buckeyes (4-0), who won for only the second time in seven games in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

Everyone, get out and support this team. I think the Buckeyes may have something…
