Stefanie Spielman’s Champions Honored

10 TV: The 10th annual Stefanie's Champions awards that took place on Wednesday was missing Stefanie Spielman, whose name is synonymous with the event. The awards, given by Ohio State and the James Cancer Hospital, honors family, friends and caregivers who help cancer patients fight through their illness.

Spielman, a breast cancer survivor, is home battling her old adversary… "As you can see, I'm on my own this year," said her husband, Chris Spielman. "Throughout the breast cancer experience, or any cancer experience, you're going to have good times and bad times. And that's why you kind of reflect back on those stories to summon some strength."

Chris Spielman continues to provide strength for Stephanie and was the inspiration for the awards. He was named the first champion 10 years ago when he gave up his football career to be by his wife's side. "A lot of people step up to the plate and find their willingness to serve and to give," Chris Spielman said.

Six people were honored on Wednesday, including a teenager who helped her mother through the illness to a doctor who bought a home for his cancer-stricken employee, a homeless mother of six.... The stories continue to inspire. Although Stefanie was not there in body, her spirit loomed large…

Together, the Spielmans have raised over $5 million for breast cancer research and patient care.
