NBC 4: Officials confirmed two cases of H1N1 in Franklin County Saturday. Health officials said the patients are both men, ages 33 and 31. They have been treated and are recovering at home.
Early Friday, officials confirmed a new probable H1N1 influenza case and negated another. It is unclear if the probable H1N1 case was the patient confirmed on Saturday. Columbus Public Health and the Franklin County Health Department said approximately 50 people were exposed to the Ohio State Medical Center employee who was confirmed a probable case Wednesday.
That included the five Columbus firefighters who were exposed to the probable case Monday. Those firefighters were assisting another paramedic unit with unloading a male patient in the emergency room. The firefighters are on medication. Officials said two or perhaps three people of the exposed 50 were showing symptoms of H1N1 Friday.
The Columbus firefighters weren’t among those showing symptoms. In total, Franklin County still had two probable cases of H1N1 Friday and two or possibly three suspected cases. To put some of that in perspective, 478 people died from seasonal flu in Franklin County this past fall, and it was considered a mild flu season.
Late Friday, OSU officials say a student was diagnosed with a probable case of H1N1 in Stradley Hall. According to the university, the student was exposed to the virus outside the university through close contact with family members that were believed to have the H1N1 virus. The student is a 19-year-old male, freshman and a resident of Stradley Hall. The university is following recommended precautions to prevent the spread of the illness to others.
Friday morning, the student developed symptoms of the virus. A preliminary test came back negative for H1N1, but those tests are only 60 percent accurate, so he was moved to another location for isolation and is being treated and monitored. According to OSU media relations, Stradley Hall is being disinfected and hand sanitizer placed around the building in light of the probable H1N1 case.
The university is communicating with the 450 residents of Stradley Hall. In addition, individuals who had close contact with the student over the last two days are being notified. The student health center is offering preventive medication to those individuals. The Wilce Student Health Center, 1875 Millikin Rd., will hold clinic hours for students tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students also can call the clinic’s advice nurse line at 614-292-4321.

Quick Read
When I saw Joe Hallet’s story on John Kasich forming an exploratory committee buried on page B3, my first thought was why isn’t this a front page story? (We’ve been calling it the Curious Noncommittal of John Kasich for months)… Then, I read the article…
Sports leads with the Kentucky Derby (appropriately) and the Detroit Red Wings defeat of the Anaheim Ducks (curiously)… Tom Reed also types an emotional story about Ryan Salmons, the nineteen year old Blue Jackets fan who died of cancer yesterday…
Jeffrey Sheban (Life and Arts) had an interesting concept with his column on the Ohio State women’s synchronized skating team… Unfortunately, the story fizzled… Amy Saunders (life and arts) column on the Franklin Park Conservatory’s annual hat dy was outstanding…

They Made the Evening
Concepts attract crowds… Details make the crowd’s evening… It isn’t enough to advertise a theme and request the audience’s participation… There are hundreds of venues in this city where an audience can spend their money… The audience expects reciprocation… They expect a genuine effort in exchange for their money…
Upon my arrival for the Lodge Bar Derby, the weather was apocryphal… (I will simply say this, if the actual Kentucky Derby is run in weather resembling this, it will be about as enjoyable to watch as the Donnie Wahlberg-Sugar Bar crowd)… Fortunately, a robust crowd, intrigued I’m assuming, by the horse racing theme, defied the weather and layered the venue… They would not be disappointed…
From the streamers to the tables, the décor should have inspired a rendition of “My Old Kentucky Home…” As impressive as the aesthetics were, the minutia was even more superb… I registered to bet and received a racing form, which included odds, jockeys, stables, and sires… The odds were a given, how else would they calculate winning without them? But, the effort of concocting a third and fourth level of information, a level only diehard horse enthusiasts might understand, was exemplary…
What makes this even more remarkable is the fact that the races were via a videotaped presentation… I know what you’re thinking; they weren’t going to show live races… Of course they weren’t, which I why they could have stopped with horses names, post positions, and odds… The fact that emphasis was placed on details, not only on the racing form, but on the tables, where cards could be found explaining the various positions… The wagering procedure itself… The entire concept matched anything attempted by any venue…
My one critique is the money… Whereas Sugar Bar’s Casino Night currency was more inventive, Lodge Bar’s currency was borrowed from monopoly (I felt like I should have been handed a thimble or race car upon entrance)… With that said, the event’s overall detail exceeded even my exacting standards… The experience was worth challenging the ghastly weather, which finally subsided two hours after I arrived…
General Manager Pat West and Promotions Superstar Jen Bunny, as well as their staffs (which I will mention later), merit applause… I knew Lodge Bar would present an interesting evening… They always excel… However, and I cant say this enough, their attention to detail was precise… It is efforts such as these that place them amongst the elite venues in this city…
While the Lodge Bar Derby was perfectly scripted, spontaneous moments always, always provide the preeminent column material… One such moment and the highlight of the evening, commenced with Alexa, simply acting like her precocious self…
Approximately, forty minutes after the derby concluded, Lodge Bar Friday Night DJ Shawn played the Cupid Shuffle… Standing behind the bar (appearing as always gorgeous and I assume waiting for an order) was Alexa, who naturally started imitating the popular dance… Two other servers started mimicking her and three minutes later, they were commencing their own version of the dance in the entrance way…
It was at this moment that Pat West seized an opportunity… He approached Alexa and friends and pointed them toward the stage… What started as peppiness, concluded with three employees on the stage, joining the crowd in an outstanding version of the shuffle…
Following an hour and a half away (it’s called Always Live), I returned to Lodge Bar… Despite the weather (have I mentioned it was putrid), Lodge Bar had improved their crowd… The venue wasn’t crushed and there were only some choice bunnies… However, Lodge Bar wasn’t sitting virtually empty as some other venues were… Which on this night was an accomplishment…
What made the crowd even more enjoyable was the Lodge Bar staff (both on the clock and off)… On one of my first nights in the venue, Joe (whom I’ve mentioned previously), joked that there was one night which was labeled “drink with a Lodge Bar employee night”… This wasn’t that night, but that objective was entirely possible… Crown Princess Kadi, in a dazzling white coat… Jessie, in a scrumptious black and white dress… And Trevor, in what he normally wears… were all enjoying the view from the patron’s side of the bar…
Serving them their drinks (and occasionally speaking with me) were the remainder of the venue’s equally talented ensemble cast, Jen Bunny, Mike and half dozen others whose names (I apologize for this) escape me at this early hour… I know I’ve said this previously, but it’s not only the superstar drink slingers, it’s the servers and security… Every level of Lodge Bar makes every visit truly enjoyable…
And therein lies the success of this website… Without Princess Kadi and Jen Bunny, Genius Rick and the intoxicating tart, Superstars Pat and Trevor, the writing would be simply words… I dedicate this column and all previous and subsequent columns to them… They are the rock stars… They are who everyone wants… They made us…

Always Live
Another evening, another conversation with the preeminent mix pair in this city. DJ Legend is his typical frenetic self. We discuss last night’s Lodge Bar energy and the critique of this site as a running nightlife play-by-play.
Watching Steve Chase work is watching the collaboration of chaos and spectacular… Play this song, select the next song, talk with two bunnies, and quote “Major League.” As I watch him stare into his computer screen, I can observe his mind gnashing… His complete command of his internal commission is incomprehensible…

Sugar Bar Promotions Superstar Shawn Dolan appears and speaks as someone meant to excel at their profession… With the exception of forgetting what holiday occurs on May 5 (and yes he stood clueless for at least a minute), Dolan is articulate and polished… We discuss the venue’s varied crowds, the weather, and what makes Sugar Bar and Park Street Patio what they are… I get smarter every moment I listen…
Speaking of people who make me smarter, I arrive next door and speak with Park Street Patio Promotions Superstar Randy Haffey… Our conversation is much more contemplative and cerebral, with the exception of one moment… During a discussion of his recent sickness, Haffey offers the phrase “I kicked the swine flu’s ass…”

Swine Flu Infects Ohio State
NBC 4: OSU officials say a student is diagnosed with a probable case of H1N1 in Stradley Hall. According to the university, the student was exposed to the virus outside the university through close contact with family members that were believed to have the H1N1 virus.
The student is a male, freshman and a resident of Stradley Hall. The university is following recommended precautions to prevent the spread of the illness to others. The student has been moved to another location for isolation and is being treated and monitored. According to OSU media relations, Stradley Hall is being disinfected and hand sanitizer placed around the building in light of the probable H1N1 case

FINALLY: John Kasich Will Run
10 TV: Sources told 10TV's John Fortney on Friday that former Republican U.S. Rep. John Kasich will run for Ohio governor next year. Kasich was expected to name a campaign treasurer on Friday and file the paperwork needed to establish a campaign committee.
A formal announcement regarding Kasich's intent to run for governor was expected to come at a later date. Kasich served as a congressman eight times, from 1983 to 2001. Since Kasich left public office, he has served as a host on a Fox News program.

Blue Jackets’ Inspiration Passes Away
10 TV: Ryan Salmons, the terminal cancer patient whose story of survival gained precedence during the Blue Jackets' playoff run, died Friday afternoon. Salmons was 19.
In late March, the Jackets signed Salmons to a one-day player contract. He later developed close-knit relationships with the players, most notably Jason Chimera and Manny Malholtra. "I can't put into words what this team has done for me and my drive and my morale," Salmons said last month. "It really does mean a lot to me."
Chimera said last month that it was no secret that Salmons was having an impact on the Blue Jackets and their push to the playoffs. "If this kid can fight through that, we can sure make the playoffs and do a big run," Chimera said. "Guys want to get there for him."
Included in Salmons' contract were two tickets to the team's first-ever playoff game, which he vowed to see. "We made the playoffs. That's the first step," Salmons said after the Jackets clinched a spot in the playoffs. "I believe we're going to be a good playoff team. It's just a matter of getting there. We'll see how it goes."

Lantern Loses Friday
10 TV: The Ohio State University student newspaper, The Lantern, will begin scaling back production this fall. The newspaper will no longer be distributed on Fridays, opting instead to produce more content for its Web site…
John Milliken, the newspaper's general manager, said eliminating the Friday edition will help the paper financially. "Your not printing hard copies (and) Friday tends to be a pretty quiet day at the university," Milliken said. "(There are) fewer classes, fewer students, fewer papers being picked up."
The newspaper hopes the move will help prepare students for what is occurring throughout the media industry. The Lantern plans to launch a new Web site this fall that will be constantly updated.

The Chrysler bankruptcy lead was both obvious and appropriate… Ken Gordon (sports) contributes a solid column on Chris Speilman’s entrance into the College Football Hall of Fame… And on the morning after her concert, Kevin Joy excoriates Britney Spears’s performance…
Enjoining the Revolution
When Gossip CBUS originated, I made one rule for myself… Don’t join the party… You know what they say about rules… (I already hear your thoughts… This column is about me… Well… yeah, it’s mostly about me…)
Upon my arrival at Sugar Bar, the venue was vacant… The street was crushed… Stretching from Sugar Bar to Park Street Patio and wrapped around both edges of the retaining fence was a three-stack line of bunny chasers and bunnies… Why they weren’t already in the venue, I had no clue… However, I knew once they were inside, they would intoxicate the evening…
Since I mentioned bunnies… They were omnipresent this evening… It didn’t matter if you were standing in the entrance way or the upper mezzanine, the bar area or the dance floor, you couldn’t not eye a minimum of five… The score bunnies were flirting, grinding, and exuding lust… The panorama of exquisite fashion and features rivaled any since I started this website…
Approximately, one hour after my entrance, I commenced a conversation with Onyx Promotions Superstar and Nightlife Notable Randee… And therein my rule was obliterated… Now, Randee and I had spoken previously and she is not reserved… If asked, she will tell you that she craves the camera and that she makes the cameras crave her… I must say that I have a new appreciation for her philosophy…
I’m trying to capture the evening’s essence in one hundred and forty characters and Randee is cuddling, dancing, flirting, grinding… She is not only capturing my attention, she is hoarding it all for herself… It takes ten minutes of dancing with her and attempting to twitter and I realize… I can’t do them simultaneously… I close my phone and she owns my complete attention, along with anything else she wants…
I know, I haven’t mentioned her appearance… I could spend two thousand characters on that… Her eyes and face are alluring… Her platinum blonde hair is enticing… Her perfectly chosen ensemble, a black top and white pants, are sufficient to own every male’s thoughts for a two months… Add her enthralling personality and you understand why this why I couldn’t concentrate on anything but her… Randee is electric velvet… She is premium tequila, igniting your tongue and spreading her wings inside your throat…
While I could continue on the current topic, I must mention the attraction of the evening, Frankie Delgado… When Brody Jenner appeared, security encircled him and he was essentially a photographic prop… Delgado was inside the cage within twenty minutes of his arrival, encircled by half dozen bunnies and two friends… Clearly, he is less well known than his Hills counterpart and that anonymity has advantages… His smile, as he observed the bunnies, could have electrified Park Street…
As those bunnies danced to a barrage of Britney Spears music (I don’t know where the DJ came across the idea to play so much of her music), rumors spread that the pop tart herself was in the venue post-concert… I knew these rumors were likely hype and I don’t know why Sugar Bar marred their exquisite evening with hyperbole… Spears, and the mind of the person who started the rumor, were nowhere to be found…
I know I will receive questions as to why I included that last paragraph, just as I recently received a critique about this site as a running nightlife play-by-play and the fact that no one needs or wants a running nightlife play-by-play… The truth is, this website is not about criticism or publicizing… It’s not about revealing secrets or stroking egos… This site is a commentary on a city, which is geographically larger than Las Vegas, yet thinks of itself like Reno… New York and Los Angeles capture their excessive moments… It’s about time Columbus captures theirs…
