Quick Read

Holly Zachariah leads with a spectacular profile of Shawn McMahon, an Afghanistan veteran, whose shooting was not limited to gunfire…

Bruce Cadwallander and Theodore Decker (metro) combine for a haphazard story whose premise, I believe, was the felony gang law… Mark Ferenchik (metro) types another in the series of Dispatch stories on the East Side as an artistic paradise...

Sports leads randomly with the Cleveland Cavaliers and a feature on Oscar Robertson (whose ties to Columbus end in Cincinnati)… Kevin Mayhood (insight) spends an entire piece on rust (yes, rust)… Jim Weiker splits Home and Garden with a pair of piece… One on community gardens that is intriguing… One on garden decorations that is insipid…

And Arts and Life’s “Summer in the City” is an exemplary outline for the next three months…

I live on the East Side with my wife and son. I was mentioned in the article. We have a beautifully historic home, we're a 30-minute walk from the Arena District, and love the affordability that this area offers to young families and first-time homebuyers.

The neighborhood is not only livable, but one of the most solid investment areas in the central city right now.

Many people said the Short North was "not livable" 25 years ago. And yet the people who bought into the neighborhood and turned it around have created a thriving cultural haven.

The same thing is happening in other parts of the city. You sound like you just need a little perspective.

Otherwise, to make blanket statements and sweeping generalizations about a neighborhood with potential does a disservice to the folks who are putting time and energy and money into restoring these streets into their former glory.

I'd be more than happy to buy you a coffee over here on Long Street sometime and give you a short walking tour. That is.. if you're not too afraid to venture outside of your comfort zone. ;)

Kudos to Walker. While there are some (too many) blighted areas on the East Side, I'm happy to all it home.
