Robert Warzycha is the new head coach of the MLS champion Columbus Crew. Warzycha was an assistant coach with the Crew for the past six seasons. The 45-year-old takes over for Sigi Schmid, who led Columbus to the championship last month. Schmid was recently named head coach of the expansion Seattle Sounders FC.
Crew general manager Mark McCullers said Monday other head coaching candidates were considered, but none had Warzycha’s soccer expertise, experience or potential. Through the 2002 season, Warzycha was on the field as a player for 16 years and remains the Crew’s all-time career assists leader, with 61. He ranks fourth in points (99).
I understand the value of spin… But, spinning has it’s limits… “Other head coaching candidates were considered, but none with this assistant’s soccer expertise, experience, or potential.” He was an assistant coach for six years… If no one else hired him for these six years, how much expertise or potential could he really have?
