Immerse yourself within this city’s nightlife and you will achieve a realization. It is the circus. The drink slingers and promotions superstars are the attractions. The bunnies, bunny chasers, intoxicated, and randoms are the spectacle. And the margin separating the cliques is negligible.
Prior to Cinco de Mayo and St. Patrick’s Day, I had minimal and moderated expectations… I should have maintained similar skepticism for Memorial Day. I assumed the comfortable weather and weekend placement would instinctively entice the masses into various venues. What I forgot was that this city calendars only Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for the purposes of inebriation…
Throughout the evening, Lodge Bar was scattered. With music inside and outside, the crowd remained energetic. A plurality of chairs were occupied. Several tables were occupied. Still, the crowd never resembled or rivaled Mardi Gras… It never even resembled or rivaled four days ago, when the venue secured scoreboard over Sugar Bar… (Trust me, the results were different this evening)…
While I typically covet crowd and energy, scattered evenings produce spectacular column material…. And no one is more spectacular column material or simply spectacular than Lodge Bar Promotions Superstar Jen Bunny… As she danced, flirted, laughed, and talked, it was impossible to extract my attention from her (And I suppose it helped that I didn’t actually want to)… It’s not as if Lodge Bar isn’t littered with platinum… However, Jen Bunny is an immaculate marquee amongst their several scrumptious solitaires (for those unfamiliar with the terminology, google diamonds)…
Jen Bunny was marvelous material, but Jake Wisdom provided the evening’s signature conversation… Since my initial appearance at Lodge Bar, I must have spoken with Jake on two dozen occasions… What makes every conversation valuable is the expertise and knowledge I acquire by simply listening… I may offer parameters or topics, but Jake owns the conversation…
Within thirty minutes of my arrival at Lodge Bar (for those of you lost, this is what you might term a flashback), I received a phone call and stepped outside the venue… As I spoke on my phone, Park Street Patio and Sugar Bar Co-Owner Mike Gallichio pulls alongside the curb… He asks if I reside or work at Lodge Bar… I answer no… He then asks why I spend the hours I spend at Lodge Bar if I don’t reside or work there….
Obviously, I expect venue executives and promotions superstars to campaign and request coverage… However, Sugar Bar’s continuous campaigning is ridiculous… They critique other venues… They protest our coverage… They seek attention… Do I never venture into their venue? (Wait, I am in their venue almost every evening)… Sugar Bar is an exemplary scene and their owners shouldn’t campaign… They should simply enjoy what I type…
They should also enjoy what I twitter, if and when the conversations cease and allow me to twitter… I can’t say this enough, I adore and respect everyone that I encounter… They make this website possible… However, their charm and my penchant for never shutting up are impeding my reporting… Half of my evenings are conversations… Seventy percent of my evenings should be reporting…
Eventually, I entered Sugar Bar, which enjoyed a swarmed night… I could spend multiple paragraphs discussing that, but I will instead focus on the conversations, which captivated most of my attention… Jen Excellence and Molly Style are the most amusing and random pair in this city… Whether it’s mocking the masses or promoting themselves, they are never sans confidence or a concise retort…
Shawn Money and Avi Primetime are a pair which separately provide enough column material for a month and jointly provide enough column material for the next two years… They are entertaining and informative… They are sarcastic and serious… They comprehend what their occupation is and isn’t… Whereas the masses want to be them for an evening, they wouldn’t mind being one of the masses…
And now I must mention another superstar, someone I met only two evenings ago, but someone who has already earned several conversations and a twitter mention… Sugar Bar Promotions Superstar Whitney Allure… You appreciate her presence for five minutes… You speak with her for ten minutes… And you can’t completely understand her… Behind her crystal appearance, she is a New Life Crisis song… She’s blessed, depressed… Her inner beauty remains confined…
Preventing one completely vacant evening was Park Street Patio, who was swarmed from the moment I arrived until the moment I closed my phone… Every chair as occupied… Every table was occupied… And their music was incredible… I’m unaware as to how much money was raised, but if the event served as an indication, the coffers should be crushed…
Speaking of worthy causes, I enjoyed a twenty-minute conversation with Crawl for Cancer Organizer JP Ratajczak, whose event (which will include all afternoon and evening twitter coverage) is less than one week away… As one speaks with JP, he is clearly scattered and swarmed with details… Yet, his workload doesn’t detract from his intrigue or passion for the event that his consumed his persona…
I cannot conclude this column without mentioning Park Street Patio and Sugar Bar Promotions Superstar Randy Haffey, whose success I referenced earlier… On a regrettable and scattered evening, Haffey executed an eighteen-carat success. His triumph merits praise, not only for the charitable contribution it provided, but for the highlight it intermixed into an otherwise horrific night…
As light illuminated the five venues that were available this evening, bunnies, bunny chasers, and randoms staggered toward their cars… Drink slingers counted receipts, emptied trash, and scrubbed bottles… This was not an evening either clique had expected… Yet, each was only hours away from another evening in the center ring…

A Public Service Announcement From Generation One A.M.
Generation One A.M. conducts meetings when the vast majority of our city is asleep. We connect in casual and unimaginable ways. We consume more alcohol in four years, than our parents consumed in twenty. We make important choices via facebook, instant message, and text. We seek the spotlight in any manner imaginable. If any or all of these illustrate you, you are of this generation.
Upon my arrival for Dos de Mayo, Lodge Bar was crushed. When I say I crushed, I don’t mean merely impassable walkways. I mean the entrance line consumed half a block, there was a two deep stack in the red room, and the patio crowd could have exceeded the Garage Bar’s capacity. The menagerie of patrons, dancing, drinking, singing and talking was incomprehensible.
And whereas the bunnies were scarce at McFadden’s, Lodge Bar’s every area was a bunny clutch. You couldn’t walk ten steps and not encounter one… They were on the stage, on the dance floor, seated at tables, talking with their friends, and guzzling alcohol as if it were chocolate… If you were a single male and you couldn’t induce one into a conversation, you were either an ox or you weren’t trying…
And these were fashionable bunnies… No couch patters or outdated logos were present… Vogue could have done an entire shoot this evening… The colors were bright and vibrant… The prints were leopard, zebra, and others… The form flattery was also perfect… One could easily locate any cut and clarity they desired…
From every angle, the top railing above the dance floor, behind the stage, on the steps adjacent to the DJ booth, in the entranceway, the panorama of bunnies was exquisite… I didn’t regret my previous two hours spent at McFadden’s… I simply regretted that I didn’t have two more hours to enjoy the panorama…
What made the evening exceptional and unique was that throughout the two hours I twittered, I barely spoke with any Lodge Bar employees… Now, I know what you are thinking, I have a minimum of one employees name in every column… How could I say not speaking with them was an exceptional evening? Simple… the crushed spectacle satisfied both of our objectives… I got column material and they got paid…
What was unsatisfying was yet another varied display of bachelorette debauchery… I know I have mentioned this previously and allow me to say that as a member (and essentially founder) of Generation One A.M., I am not opposed to excess… However (and this is a huge however), excess and stupidity are entirely opposite… Excessive is consuming one more Soco and Lime than you should have and dancing on the bar… Stupid is wearing a pink plastic penis on your head and mimicking anally assaulting a stuffed bear…
And while I am on the subject, why are the penis displays necessary? Bunnies and heifers, males know what they are… They know what they will be inserting into you after you make them go through a week of flowers, guests, and vows… They don’t need, and more specifically the rest of this city doesn’t need to see you wear one on your head to show us you are getting married… That cubic zirconia on your finger makes that point…
I have said it before, I will repeat it again… I’m not demeaning weddings and if, the night before, the bride to be wants to get crazy, I am fine with that… However, avoid displays that make the rest of us want to throw up… We don’t need your crowns or your sashes or pink plastic penises….
What I could have enjoyed, and I’m assuming the crowd would have enjoyed also, was another three or four sets from Mission 19, who proliferated an already nuclear energy… I had seen Ryan and Joe perform previously and I knew what to expect… Yet, as they reveled in the crowd’s energy, as they stoked that energy, you could view them elevating their performance…
It’s not the song selection or even the vocals that epitomize Ryan and Joe… What makes them special, what sets any band apart, is their personality… As they create energy, consume shots, interact with the crowd, and sing, you sense that their persona isn’t contrived… What they are showcasing on stage isn’t an act… They are this entertaining…
My observation was confirmed within ten minutes of their final song, when Ryan I spoke off stage… Given his “99 Problems” rendition, I suggested (only half-jokingly) that he should sing “Public Service Announcement” when the band returns for Red White and Boom… Ryan (who said on stage several times that he was drunk) proceeded to almost flawlessly rattle off the song… He said afterward it’s a personal favorite, but that’s irrelevant… Anyone with that level of knowledge and skill is remarkable…
Equally remarkable was the man in the spotlight when Mission 19 was not in the spotlight, Lodge Bar Saturday Night DJ Michael… Now, some mixers would see the between sets opportunity as a moment for their own agenda… Michael didn’t and I applaud him… He kept a packed dance floor pulsating with “Single Ladies,” “Poker Face,” and “If You Seek Amy…” There are DJ’s in this city that could learn from him…
As Michael spun his closing selections and the evening concluded, predictably bizarre and yet still entertaining behavior ensued… An apparently disgruntled girl wrote on her receipt “give me better service f&ck&r.” Exactly, what did she believe she would accomplish? If someone is terrible, you leave them a minimal tip… You don’t insult them on your receipt or the next time (and there’s always a next time), they spit in your cocktail…
Then, there was Seth (and no his name isn’t actually Seth, I’m using that because of this scene in Entourage)… With one minute remaining for legal alcohol purchases, he requested a Jager Bomb… He was informed that it was cash only… And he offered one hundred dollars… I’m serious… He offered one hundred dollars for a shot… Ignore for a moment that he was intoxicated (actually plastered is the word)… When he woke up in the morning, he would have had to wrestle with an impossible question… Which was worse, the hangover or the fact that he will now be short on his bills?
With the lights brightened and the crowd exiting the premises, I could finally speak with the evening’s true stars… Mike and Nick, two of the most insightful people I encounter on a weekly basis… Jake, one of the most genuine people I have met since I started this website… Promotions Superstar, bartender, and biscuit Jen Bunny, who I think said five words to me, but yet remained adorable…
The two most notable closing conversations were with (and anyone could have seen this coming) Crown Princess Kadi and Promotions Superstar\Bartender Kattie… Princess and I could talk everyday and yet every conversation with her could last two hours… Her personality is that infectious… Kattie is delightful… Her age exceeds 21, of that I am almost positive, and yet her appearance remains completely scrumptious…
As almost a half dozen conversations concluded, the thoughts of the stars and myself were universal… After an abysmal Friday night, where rain dictated the agenda, Generation One A.M. responded with a provocative, one sentence statement… Allow me to reintroduce myself…

From Humdrum to Ecstasy
The greatest nights evolve. They commence with no one around… You arrive and the venue is practically empty… You can catch up with your favorite bartender; catch the end of the sporting event you were watching before you left… You can relax… The night continues with an influx of other customers… Not enough that you feel overwhelmed and want to leave… Just enough to where you consume their energy and don’t want to leave… The night concludes with bunnies everywhere and a jammed dance floor… The scene makes you think, “Thank God I didn’t bail at 9:00.”
Officially, I’m never arriving at Lodge Bar prior to midnight again… For the second consecutive week, I walked in pre-9:00 and the venue was vacant (and when I say vacant, I mean I could set up a dozen pins at the other end and bowled a few frames)… Fourteen people (not including staff), were watching television, sipping their alcohol, and I will assume, like me, praying the night picked up…
With nothing else to cover (unless I really did want to count cracks in the bar), my eyes focused on the Blue Jackets, who were in the third period, locked in a 3-3 tie with the Toronto Maple Leafs… Thankfully, the game was intense enough (yes, you can finally about the Blue Jackets this year) to hold my attention…. Except for one moment… In the midst of the game transitioning from the third period into overtime into a shootout… Two bartenders (who I am assuming were bored beyond words), started into the most obscure of conversations… Mork from Ork… Seriously… The spent five minutes discussing the red jump suit he wore and his signature catch phrases… Five minutes, in Columbus, on a Thursday, spent discussing Mork from Ork… We now return you to the world, in which, you understand most of what we are saying…
Moments after the Blue Jackets wrapped up a shootout victory (2-1 in the extra frame), I encountered Jake, another Lodge bartender, and we proceeded to have a ten minute conversation about twitter (It’s great to see everyone at Lodge discovering twitter)… We talked about what twitter is and why you should use it (two questions I could answer with confidence)… Then, ten minutes later, we discussed other technology and website ideas… Jake, whom I had never met before tonight, has to be one of the smartest bartenders in this city…
As I said at the outset, the best nights involve a slow beginning, followed by a steady improvement… Lodge Bar had the slow beginning… The Blue Jackets victory was enjoyable, the conversation with Jake was outstanding, and now, I was starting to notice improvement… It started small, with a trickle of bunnies… Then another cluster and another… As I stood with a bouncer at approximately 11 p.m., he looked at the still half-empty bar and without hesitation said, “If we were going to be busy, we’d be busy by now.”
About ten minutes after those famous last words, I encountered WNCI’s Gonzo, one of the most talented people in this city… As we kicked around ideas, which we had started discussing last week, he told me about the potentially amazing stage show he has cooked up for Mardi Gras Tuesday… This is what I mean when I say the kid is talented… We spoke for a couple more minutes and then he hit the microphone to officially kick off Thursday night… That’s when it hit me… If I come out Tuesday, I’ll miss American Idol….
With Gonzo working the crowd and the music starting to intensify, the night continued improving… Clusters of bunnies… Packs of bunnies… And the bunny chasers… From 10:45 to midnight, Lodge Bar moved from weak to wow, from a three-paragraph wrap to which one are we on now? I saw that same bouncer again at midnight and the expression on his face told the entire story… He didn’t expect this, but he was thrilled it had happened…
Speaking of things not expected, but thrilling… In between the bunny rush and the half-dozen random conversations which ensued, what could only be described as Lodge Bar Employee Night broke out… If you were following us on twitter (and believe me, I saw enough of your cell phones to know that you were), you know that the first employee discovered was promotions manager Jennifer (gorgeous girl, gorgeous dancer)… But, the night discoveries end there…
I’m standing on two different sets of stairs throughout the evening and I twice encounter Haley, bartender, promoter, and complete muffin… Both Jennifer and her were fun conversations, they are fun people and it was outstanding to see both in non-working, alcohol consuming mode…. But, seeing both of them paled in comparison to seeing someone else… Princess Kadi…
Dressed in all black with silver jewelry, Kadi looked worth eighteen carats tonight… And her personality, her laugh, they acted worth thirty-six… Clearly, Kadi was enjoying consuming the alcohol, instead of distributing the alcohol… With a Miller Lite bottle in her hand, that smokehouse rasp in her voice, and a smile that is simply to perfect for words… Kadi owned my attention throughout every word of our multiple conversations…
She owned everyone else’s attention with what she did during “Live Your Life…” Once again, if you were following us on twitter (and if you weren’t, you really missed something), you know what I am talking about… Princess and her companion (whose name would be nice at this point), on top one of the stage speakers, grinding and shaking their asses (and Kadi was without shoes no less)… I understand there were males in the bar with girlfriends, but seriously, they couldn’t have been paying attention to them… Kadi was the attraction…
I know what I said last Thursday, that Lauren is, on some level a challenger to Kadi for the standard at Lodge Bar… Lauren is exquisite, no question… But, Kadi is my star crush… You cannot blend that much beauty and personality and not be the most perfect… Lauren is amazing, but Kadi is the Crown Princess… And the crown is not revocable…
As the clock walked into a.m. territory, the bunnies stream only continued… And variety was the word… they were short… they were tall… they were blonde, brunette, and mixed… They had curves, they had perfect smiles… The number of exemplary bunnies was equal to the number of males wearing bizarre wardrobe choices…
And this is where I have to get serious for a moment… This lesson is not directed at the bunnies, who can pretty much wear a Wal-Mart shopping bag if they have the frame for it… This lesson is for the bunny chasers… I hate to be blunt (ok, no I don’t)… Your wardrobes need work… Lodge Bar doesn’t have a dress code and they shouldn’t… You should be smart enough and adult enough to understand fashion (you don’t have to be gay, you just need to read Men’s Vogue once in a while)…
Layers… Collared shirts (polos or button downs, it doesn’t matter)… and color coordination… None of this is hard… But, you make it seem hard and you make this speech necessary when you show up wearing hoodies with decade old Cincinnati Reds logos on them or a Diego Maradona soccer jersey (you know he got busted for drugs twice right?)… This is not your fraternities night out for dollar beers… This is a class establishment… Pretend you know what class is…
As I left Lodge at 1:40, there were still bunnies showing up… Less than one hour until the doors are locked and they are showing up… Somehow, when I could have been counting those cracks in the bar, I had a feeling the night would end like this…
