Generation Chatter: Platinum Bunny Multimedia’s Reorganization

Time is more valuable than money. One can acquire additional money. One cannot acquire additional time. Since Platinum Bunny Multimedia’s inception, I have enhanced my portfolio with exciting and intensive, yet unanticipated projects. Culture Popped, Googling Atlee Hammaker, and Gossip CBUS’ requirements conflict with these projects and therefore compromise must occur.

Generation Chatter , via a one hour weekday webcast and my twitter, will unite Culture Popped’s expansive opinion, Googling Atlee Hammaker’s expeditious comedy, and Gossip CBUS’ social and special event coverage. My twitter account, which averages over fifty tweets per day, has been operational since earlier this month. Generation Chatter’s initial webcast will occur on Monday.

In our modern online environment, one must remain nimble and properly allocate every moment. While Culture Popped, Googling Atlee Hammaker, and Gossip CBUS archives will remain available, their practical existence has concluded. Generation Chatter and my twitter will serve as my public method of communication. This announcement and decision will continue my current interests and permit supplementary projects.

Benefit Co-Organizer Bridgett Weizer-Granger will unite the simultaneous events, when she joins Googling Atlee Hammaker’s broadcast.

Mad Men: A Southwestern City Schools Benefit will commence at 9:00 p.m. Mad Men Premiere Live Pre-Show will commence at 9:30 p.m. Event attendees and online observers should submit comments and questions throughout the broadcast. Benefit details are below…

Mad Men: A Southwestern City Schools Benefit Synopsis
Combining 1960s cultural commentary on the hit show Mad Men with real-time Columbus community needs, a local fundraiser/watch party will premiere the third season of the AMC hit at Renaissance Hotel Bar 41 on Sunday, August 16, starting at 9 p.m. A $5 suggested donation at the event will benefit Citizens for South-Western City Schools.

Nominated for a stunning 16 Emmy Awards… Local “maddicts” are buzzing about the show, airing from 10 p.m – 11 p.m. on widescreen TVs during the watch party in Mynt’s chic bar space. Whether you’re a suit or a skirt, don your fedoras or white gloves and get ready for a swanky, scintillating evening of chit-chat and cocktails to benefit a timely local cause.

“I’m fascinated by the depiction of the glory days of advertising on Madison Avenue, with the drama that accompanied gender roles in the workplace and a home during a cultural revolution of shifting family values in the 1960s,” said event organizer Crystal Olig, of Westerville.

“When we were starting to put the event together, right after the failed vote on Issue 2, we decided to try and help South-Western City Schools however we could,” said co-organizer Bridget Weizer-Granger.

Mad Men Synopsis
The series revolves around the conflicted world of Don Draper (Jon Hamm), the biggest ad man (and ladies man) in the business, and his colleagues at the Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency. As Don makes the plays in the boardroom and the bedroom, he struggles to stay a step ahead of the rapidly changing times and the young executives nipping at his heels. The series also depicts authentically the roles of men and women in this era while exploring the true human nature beneath the guise of 1960s traditional family values.

South Western Schools Will Revisit Levy

10 TV: The South-Western City Schools board of education voted on Wednesday night to proceed with placing a levy issue before voters for the third time this year. The proposed 7.4-mill levy would be headed to the November ballot once the board gives final approval at a scheduled meeting Thursday night…

The new levy is lower than the 8.3-mill levy rejected by voters in May and again in August. In addition to reducing the levy amount, the school board plans to introduce a pay-to-participate option for athletics and other extracurricular activities, which were eliminated after the previous two levy defeats.

Hundreds of mostly pro-levy supporters gathered at Wednesday night's board meeting to hear how the board plans to sell the levy to a bitterly divided community. If passed in November, the new levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home an additional $227 a year.

10 TV: A man was arrested and charged Wednesday in connection with the death of a 4-month-old girl. Izabella Fields died on July 29 after she was transported to Nationwide Children's Hospital from a home on Snyder Court, located on the city's northeast side. An autopsy later revealed that the child died from head trauma and her death was ruled a homicide, police said. On Wednesday, Richard Davidson was apprehended in Knox County and charged in connection with Fields' death. Davidson, 25, faces charges of murder and felonious assault.

10 TV: Police said that a man died Thursday afternoon after he was shot earlier in the day. Dominque L. Searcy, 21, died at Grant Medical Center shortly before 2 p.m., according to police. The shooting took place in the 1000 block of Studer Avenue on the south side. Investigators said that at about 12:30 p.m., Searcy was found lying on the sidewalk in front of a home. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Columbus police homicide squad at 614-645-4730.

Sexual Monster Is Sentenced

NBC 4: A man who said he has had sex with 800 to 900 women over the past seven years was sentenced Thursday. Edwin “Gene” Zimmerman, 47, was sentenced to 20 years in prison without the chance for parole.

He was sentenced in Franklin County Common Pleas Court on two first-degree felony rape charges and one attempted rape charge. Judge Richard Frye also fined him $35,000 and labeled him as a sexual predator. He pleaded guilty to those charges Monday, June 22.

Zimmerman, 46, was arrested Thursday, July 3, 2008, after two women said they were abducted for sex. When he was arrested, Zimmerman told investigators he had slept with 800 to 900 women during the past seven years. Investigators said Zimmerman claimed to have targeted homeless women and prostitutes on the city’s West Side.

Zimmerman’s criminal record is long and violent, according to authorities. In 1985, Zimmerman was charged with sexual battery. He also has been charged with numerous counts of domestic violence, although many were dismissed because his victims refused to testify. Zimmerman was convicted in 2005 for aggravated assault.

10 TV: Morton's closed its downtown steakhouse on Wednesday… The company's Web site no longer listed a Columbus location and a manager at the restaurant confirmed the closure…

The restaurant had been in a fierce competition with other local steakhouses, including those from local restaurateur Cameron Mitchell, Hyde Park and national chains Ruth's Chris and Smith and Wollensky. Morton's was affected by the recession and was closing underperforming restaurants. This year, it closed four other locations, including in Charlotte, N.C.; Southfield, Mich.; Westchester, Ill.; and Minneapolis.

NBC 4: A law enforcement labor organization has endorsed a November ballot issue that would amend the state constitution to allow casinos in Ohio’s four largest cities. The Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio on Tuesday said it created the Cops for Casinos coalition because tough economic times are forcing communities to consider police layoffs.

FOP-Ohio Treasurer Mark Drum says the casino issue would give and estimated $651 million annual tax revenue to counties, major cities and school districts and provide about $13 million annually for law enforcement training. FOP-Ohio last year opposed a proposal to put a casino in Clinton County and says that plan did not guarantee tax revenue for the state or address law enforcement concerns. Proponents of the new proposal say it would create 34,000 jobs.

Husband, Wife Sentenced For Robberies

NBC 4: Robert Hustead, 36, and his wife, Michelle Hustead, 22, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery charges with firearm specifications and were sentenced in the Franklin County Common Pleas Court. Both Robert and Michelle were given a sentence of nine years in prison each plus restitution. Authorities said Robert and Michelle were responsible for nine local robberies from December 2008 through January 2009, including the robbery of a Walgreens at 4101 Cleveland Ave. Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009.

10 TV: There will be no decision Thursday regarding the fate of a popular pre-game party on Lane Avenue. A judge was expected to rule on an eviction case, which in turn could decide whether or not a party similar to Hineygate takes place before and after Ohio State football games. Instead, a continuance was ordered Thursday and a judge will hear the case later this month… Court proceedings will continue on Aug. 24.

For years Hineygate was held at the Holiday Inn on Lane Avenue, but The Ohio State University purchased the hotel and converted it into a dorm. There was interest in bringing the party back and moving it next door to the parking lot of the Thirsty "I" bar, a place formerly known as Wendell's. The bar sits on property owned by the university, and the university began the eviction process after claiming the establishment's owners were late on rent payments. In court filings, lawyers for the bar argued it is now current on its rent to the university…

Heather’s Team Raises $96,000

10 TV: Thanks to the efforts of 7,500 people who joined Heather's Team during May's Race for the Cure, 10TV was able to raise more than $96,000. 10TV presented the check Thursday to Komen Columbus. The Columbus Race for the Cure is one of the largest in the country. This year's event raised a record $2 million for local programs to battle breast cancer.

Raids Target Two Robbers

NBC 4: SWAT, troopers and the bomb squad were at a North Side apartment complex after officers found a live grenade while serving a search warrant. CPD SWAT was serving a search warrant on a burglary suspect on the 2400 block of Goldengate Square in the Abbey Lane Apartment complex. Columbus police evacuated one apartment building, knocking on the doors of about 20 apartments Thursday morning. The evacuation lasted for about two to two-and-a-half hours. Authorities also stopped northbound Cleveland Avenue traffic. A male burglary suspect was arrested from the address. Apparently, police were tipped off that a vehicle with electronics and other items was sitting in an apartment parking lot. Police impounded the vehicle. Authorities said the suspect kept calling about the vehicle so authorities released it to him and followed him back to the Abbey Lane complex and saw him taking allegedly stolen goods out of the vehicle. A female suspect also was apprehended at the apartment on outstanding warrants. Costume jewelry reportedly was found in the apartment Thursday.

10 TV: Investigators arrested a man and recovered thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise at a west side home Thursday. SWAT teams raided the home on Avondale Avenue at about 8 a.m. as part of a burglary investigation spanning Franklin, Delaware, Licking and Union counties… Inside the home, investigators found televisions, power tools, toys, several guns and boxes of ammunition. One man, whose name was not immediately released, was arrested. Officers from New Albany assisted in the raid. The suspects are believed to have broken into the home of a New Albany police officer. Investigators said the officer's weapons were stolen but it was not immediately known if the stolen firearms were found in the house…

Marijuana, LSD Factor Into Comfest Fatality

10 TV: Toxicology results show that LSD was found in the brain of an 18-year-old man who died at Comfest in June. Police were called to Comfest on June 27 and found Bryan Barbin, who had four to five stab wounds. Barbin died from his injuries at Grant Medical Center. According to the Franklin County coroner’s office, toxicology exams found LSD in the victim’s brain and that his blood tested positive for marijuana.

Tiberi Will Face Congressional Challenge

10 TV: After serving five years as a Franklin County Commissioner, Paula Brooks announced Wednesday that she will run for Congress. Brooks, a Democrat, will challenge Republican Pat Tiberi in the 12th District…

Brooks said she would focus her campaign on energy independence that will help bring new jobs to the area. She said her service as a county commissioner has shown her ability to create jobs. "Opening that new Huntington Ballpark was a regional benefit," she said. "We built tourism in the central Ohio region from $5 billion in 2005 to $7 billion today."

Brooks, a lawyer, has also served in state government. She was formally an investigator in Ohio's Attorney General's Office, and served as director of the Department of Administrative Service.

Claret Withdraws Clemency Request

NBC 4: Former Ohio State football star Maurice Clarett has withdrawn a request for early release from prison that he said would allow him to pursue an NFL career. Prisons spokeswoman JoEllen Culp said Wednesday that a letter from Clarett explaining his decision arrived at the Ohio Parole Board on Monday.

Clarett had argued that the sooner he was released, the sooner he could make a comeback, possibly in the NFL. Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien objected, saying the former Buckeyes standout hadn’t made a strong case to be released so early in his prison term.

Clarett was sentenced in September 2006 to serve at least 3 1/2 years for a holdup outside a Columbus bar and a separate highway chase earlier that year. He could still be out as early as March.

10 TV: Columbus voters approved an increase in the city's income tax on Tuesday to prevent layoffs of police and firefighters and restore services cut in the current fiscal crisis. Unofficial results showed Issue 1 passing by 52 percent to 48 percent… "We knew it was going to be close all along, one way or the other," Mayor Michael Coleman said. "This was a very difficult decision for our citizens. They made the right decision."

Opponents of the tax hike were disappointed that Issue 1 passed, but they said city leaders must now be held accountable for how the money will be spent. After returns showed Issue 1 passed, Coleman said Tuesday night that the roughly 500 police officers and firefighters threatened with layoffs would be keeping their jobs. The new brought smiles at the firefighters' union headquarters, where members of the divisions of Fire and Police smoked cigars and danced to music.

Coleman pointed out that even with the tax increase, the city still has about a $15 million deficit to make up. But he promised the yes vote on Issue 1 means no layoffs for police or fire, some of the closed recreation centers will be reopened, and city services will be maintained.

Beginning October 1, those who work in Columbus will find the city taking an additional half-percent of their pay, from 2 percent to 2.5 percent. It works out to an additional $50 for every $10,000 earned.

10 TV: Arena football and the Columbus Destroyers won't be returning to Nationwide Arena anytime soon. The Arena Football League's owners have voted to suspend the league indefinitely...

The AFL cancelled the 2009 season last December after the New Orleans franchise shut down and the economic downturn threatened the survival of other teams. Columbus Destroyers majority partner Jim Renacci had been working with other owners to try to revive the league for 2010.

The president of the Tampa Bay franchise posted a note on his Facebook page over the weekend that the AFL was suspending operations indefinitely. Renacci confirmed the news Monday evening to The Columbus Dispatch. The AFL was founded in 1987, and the Destroyers had been playing in Columbus since 2004.

10 TV: The economy is taking a toll on the Capital Area Humane Society. Five positions have been cut, including one humane agent… Agents are law enforcers who investigate abuse of all animals. Other employees will see their salaries cut, or have their hours trimmed.

The agency's director, Jodi Buckman, said the humane society is feeling the same economic pinch as other central Ohio businesses. "We realized that we needed to continue to live within our means," Buckman said. "That meant a smaller footprint for our operation. It was important we take what resources we have and we invest them in a way that ensures we can continue to provide great service for the pets and people of central Ohio."

The Capital Area Humane society operates on a budget of over $2 million a year. It is a non-profit organization that gets the bulk of its funding through donations.

When it comes to liquor establishments in the city of Columbus, residents have the option to complain through the city attorney's office. Each year, permit carriers go through a renewal process with the state, and during that process municipalities can object to the permit renewal if there are problems and complaints…

10TV obtained a list of the bars with the most police runs in the city. The list included Nvivo Club on Bush Boulevard; Condo Villa on Frebis Avenue; The Woods on East Fifth Avenue; The Lobby on South Hamilton Road; and Jeff's place on Joyce Avenue... Residents have until Sept. 1 to file complaints with the city attorney's office. In December, Columbus City Council will officially name establishments it feels should not have permits renewed.

Harrison Smith Passes Away

10 TV: Harrison Smith, considered by many as one of the architects of city development, died Sunday at the age of 83. Long before the beautiful homes, gorgeous greens and thousands of golf fans, Muirfield Village was just 1,800 acres outside the farm community of Dublin. Smith's law partner, Jeffrey Brown, said he saw the future where others saw nothing but empty fields.

Along with then-Mayor Jack Sensenbrenner, Smith helped shape the growth of Columbus during the 1950s and 60s by realizing the capital city should not be surrounded by suburbs. It needed room to grow. "If you look going around the outerbelt, many of the developments that can see along (Interstate) 270 he was involved in," Brown said. "He was involved with the development of Muirfield, Tuttle Mall, Easton (Town Center), the New Albany Co. and the Village of New Albany."

Smith was very influential outside of Columbus, but he had also had big dreams for downtown. He imagined a downtown where people would work and live. "He wanted downtown to be a 24-hour venue," Brown said. "He wanted to have a mixture of uses. He wanted excitement."

During his last year spent battling pancreatic cancer, Smith made his opinions about downtown growth known. He was outspoken in his opposition to tear down Columbus City Center. Strong, opinionated, and devoted, friends say Smith put the city first. "I think he would want you to remember that he truly loved the City of Columbus, and always tried to do the best for the city and the people that live here," Brown said.

Ohio State Reopens Renovated Library

NBC 4: After some 11 years of planning and three years of construction, the William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library on the Ohio State University campus reopened Monday. A 1998 taskforce report called for the complete renovation of the library. More than $100 million later, the renovation has been completed on time and within budget.

The east entrance of the Thompson Library looks much like it has for the last hundred or so years. Walk in, though, and it’s a different story after some $108.7 million in renovations. “The building has been totally redone,” said project manager Wes Boomgaarden. “Every window is new. All of the electrical work is new. The air-handling systems are all new. We took out all of the asbestos. It’s an asbestos-free building. It’s all-new except for the outside look.“

Three years after work began, the library opened once again to the public with more than 222,000 renovated square feet and more than 83,000 square feet of new space. The space is filled with new computers, new furniture, new everything. One of the biggest changes to the Thompson Library is huge atriums on the east and west side of the book stacks tower.

“The old building was very dark, and a lot of students found it very scary because there were a lot of dark places. It wasn’t well lit. It wasn’t safe, didn’t have a fire safety system in the stacks tower,” Boomgaarden said.

The Grand Reading Room on the east end was restored completely as well. A second reading room on the west end also was added. It was clear the library is a hit with the students. The library seats almost 1,800 people. That’s double the number of previous seats.

Several new green elements were used in this project such as low-emissive coatings, recycled fabrics and computer-controlled interior shading. The library is open to the public. Materials cannot be checked out without a borrower’s card, though.

10 TV: A male suspect allegedly robbed a West Side Huntington Bank Monday morning, and local authorities asked for your help to ID him. A male entered the Huntington Bank at 121 Georgesville Rd. at about 9:21 a.m. He handed the teller a note that said he had a weapon, he was robbing the bank and he wanted cash, authorities said. The suspect placed a small, zippered bag on the counter. The teller placed money from her drawer into the bag. No weapon was seen. The suspect fled the bank with the bag in an older, light blue-colored vehicle that was driven by a white male wearing a white T-shirt, authorities said. The suspect was described as a white male in his 20s. He is about 5 feet 8 inches tall with a thin build. He was wearing a black Pittsburgh Pirates baseball cap; a red, long-sleeved OSU T-shirt; baggy blue jeans and blue tennis shoes. Anyone with information on the suspect was encouraged to call the Franklin County sheriff’s office at 614-462-3351 or the FBI at 614-744-2168.

10 TV: Police said shots were fired in the parking lot of a northeast side bar early Monday. Dejuan Lorenzo Small called police at about 12:45 a.m. and said that he was shot in the chest outside Jeff's Place, located at 1402 Joyce Avenue… Police said bullet casings were found in the parking lot of the bar. A description of the gunman was not immediately released.

I have spent years thinking about it, fearing it, desiring it, and losing sleep over it. When is the day I say goodbye? Mind you during that whole cancer thing it took on a whole new life or death kinda meaning... but never the less it brings me to today.

I moved to Columbus when I was 18 years old to work 5 hours a week on WNCI. It was pathetic actually but I was so hungry to make myself a giant among giants with what little air time I had and would do & sacrifice anything to do it. I wanted to be funny, I wanted to be controversial... but most of all I just wanted you to know who I was.

I accomplished everything I ever wanted to accomplish in the city I fell in love with... but like many relationships through time things have become strained and bitter. When I look at the city now I don't feel that hunger to be something great anymore. I don't feel that old feeling at 6:57pm on a Sunday before I crack the mic. I feel pain... I feel anxiety... I feel tired and broken.

I see burned bridges... I see failed relationships... I see backstabbing of friends I trusted... I see failure after failure after failure to balance every success I could ever imagine having on the scorecard of life. Sadly though the biggest and most frightening thing of all I see..... routine.

Branching outside Cbus to spin the past several months has been eye opening for me. Its given me a confidence in my abilities not only as a DJ not defined by his reputation as an "asshole" or "man whore"... but by my actual ability to do the job and do it well.

I have confidence that through the lessons I have learned through an extreme balance of success and failure I have developed a formula. My mentors have taught me if you want to make an impact on your city you must have a statewide vision. To make an impact on a state you must have a country vision... and so on. I can no longer spend my life having a vision of just one city.

On September 1st I'm leaving Columbus. I can't confirm any other fact at this point other than that. More details soon...

City Eyes Election Day

August elections typically have a lower turnout.

Mayoral Hyperbolism: Special Election is Everything

10 TV: It didn't take long Wednesday for Mayor Michael Coleman to express how important he feels next week's election to decide an income tax rate increase will be. Just minutes into an one-on-one interview with 10TV's Andy Hirsch, Coleman was clear about what impact he thinks Issue One will have on the city's future. "This election is the most important day in the history of our city," Coleman said. "What it will do is define this city for a generation."

Next Tuesday, voters will decide whether the city's income tax will be raised by half of a percent. City leaders say the increase is needed to help fill a budget gap and save the jobs of an estimated 500 police officers and firefighters. While supporters of the increase are quick to warn of cuts to police and fire, retaining those positions would cost less than half the money a tax increase would generate. 10TV asked Coleman about accusations that his campaign was trying to scare people into voting in support of the increase.

Coleman said police and fire were not the only departments that would see cuts if the issue fails. "That's what you pick up," Coleman said. "We've been talking about this directly, for all city services, not just police and fire. The media has picked up on police and fire because we've never cut it."

Coleman insisted that city agencies across the board will be impacted if the increase proposal fails, including trash collection and recreation and parks. "We may very well have to eliminate them," Coleman said. "That's what's at stake. This is such a huge deficit."

10TV asked Coleman if the city had a plan in place in the event the increase is shot down. "We don't have a plan B," Coleman said. "We've talked about what we're going to do. It's pretty clear; black and white at that point."

Coleman said passage of the increase would ensure that no firefighters or police officers would be laid off. "We won't lay off a single police officer," Coleman said. "We won't lay off a single firefighter because we won't need to."

Coleman also said the increase would allow the city to reopen some of the city's recreation centers that were previously closed.

NBC 4: A man fatally shot an armed intruder while protecting his 5-year-old relative late Wednesday, authorities said. CPD said the incident started with a home invasion but it was the suspect who was fatally shot. CPD was called to a home on the 1500 block of Autumn Village Drive on reports of a shooting at about 11 p.m. Wednesday. Officers found a man on a front porch with a gunshot wound to his neck. The armed suspect broke into home shortly before he was fatally shot, CPD said. As the armed suspect entered the home, a man picked up his 5-year-old relative to protect child as well as a firearm and fired shots, according to authorities. The suspect attempted to flee the home after being wounded but collapsed on the porch. He died a short time later. Anyone with additional information on the city’s 49th homicide of 2009 was asked to call the CPD homicide squad at 614-645-4730.

NBC 4: Columbus police are investigating two incidents where suspects have impersonated police officers. According to police, the first incident involved a business on the city’s east side. An employee said she received a phone call from a man who identified himself as a police officer. The suspect allegedly said he would be in the neighborhood to collect money in an effort to patrol the area due to recent burglaries involving area business. The suspect appeared at the business and asked for a large amount of money, but when the employee informed him she did not have that much, he negotiated a price, left a receipt and Fraternal Order of Police sticker. The suspect left the scene in a light gray or olive green sport utility vehicle, which was driven by another unidentified man. About one month later, another incident involved an elderly man who was watering his lawn. He was approached by a male and female suspect, police said. The suspects held up badges as they approached the victim, showed him a picture of a man in a wanted poster, and coerced the victim into allowing them in his house. The victim became suspicious after a few minutes and stated he was calling 911. The suspects left the home, but not before taking cash and jewelry. In both incidents the suspects were well dressed. The male suspect was described as a black male, 30 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 160 to 170 pounds. He was clean cut with a mustache and was wearing a gray suit and cream-colored tie. The female suspect was described as a black female, 35 years old, 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 165 pounds. The second male suspect was described as black male, 50 years old, weighing 210 pounds with gray or partially gray hair described as being processed with waves.

Dog Murderer: The Public Fired Me

10 TV: A firefighter who was terminated earlier this month for killing his dogs before going on vacation is trying to get his job back. Former Columbus fireman David Santuomo filed a notice of appeal on Friday with the City of Columbus…

Santuomo wrote in his appeal that public opinion played a role in his termination. "I feel I was unfairly discharged due to public opinion and political pressure. Not for job performance," Santuomo wrote."

The Civil Service Commission will review the appeal. There was no timetable on when a decision would be rendered. Santuomo, 43, was fired from his on July 16 by Mitchell Brown, the city's safety director. He was terminated after pleading guilty last month to animal cruelty charges. Santuomo will begin serving a 90-day jail sentence on Sept. 16.

In December, authorities found the bodies of two dogs in a Dumpster behind Fire Station 27. Santuomo, who allegedly bragged to fellow firefighters that he shot his dogs because he was leaving for vacation, told his superiors that he killed the dogs because they accidentally consumed antifreeze.

10 TV: Germain Motor Co. announced Wednesday that it is closing its Chevrolet dealership on Friday. The dealership, located at 3101 Morse Rd., is closing in connection with General Motors' national dealership consolidation.

"Due to the current economy, GMs well publicized struggles and changes to local demographics, our location on Morse and Westerville Road has been selected by GM as one of the stores to be closed," according to a statement issued by the company. "Germain Chevrolet has been winding down business pursuant to GM's directives and will be closed at the end of this month."

According to the company, both Germain Cadillac of Easton and Germain Cadillac of Dublin will continue to operate normally and were not part of General Motors consolidation plan. The company said that it has established a hotline and froze all Chevrolet service prices, which they will offer at their Germain Cadillac dealerships in Easton in Dublin.

Federal Government Guarantees Fifty Police

10 TV: The government announced on Tuesday that the city will receive nearly $13 million in federal stimulus money to save police jobs. The money comes as the city faces a budget shortfall that could force the layoffs of nearly 300 officers…

The $12.7 million in grant money is enough to fund entry-level salaries and benefits for 50 officers for three years. On Tuesday, voters will decide whether to raise the city's income tax. The city said the hike is needed to save the jobs of hundreds of police and firefighters.

Supporters of Issue 1 said that while the grant money is great for the police department, it makes their job harder. If passed, the city income tax would increase from 2 percent to 2.5 percent. It is a tough sell for voters… "That's $150 a year that could be my kid's baseball season, his uniform, school supplies," said Kirsten Kinder, who is undecided on the issue.

Supporters of the issue said that the grant isn't enough to solve the city's budget woes, but may be enough to sway skeptical voters. "Now that I know $13 million is coming, I don't know," Kinder said.

"We appreciate the money we get from the federal government, but it doesn't solve the long-term problem," White said. "It sounds like a lot, but $4.2 million over three years is not a lot when you consider we have a large budget deficit we're trying to plug. In safety alone it's $40 million. The overall deficit is $115 million."

The city said would likely wait until voters go to the polls before deciding how to use the money, whether it will be hiring new officers or keeping officers who would otherwise be laid off.

Employee Causes Chase Evacuation

10 TV: Several thousand Chase Bank employees were evacuated from their corporate building on Tuesday after a suspicious device was found inside the massive complex. The employees were told to leave the Polaris Parkway building after the device was discovered at about 10 a.m… Employees were told to return to the building at about 12:45 p.m.

According to investigators, the device was roughly the size of a loaf of bread and contained three lights and a stopwatch. It was plugged in to an electrical outlet inside the building… It was later determined that the package was a timing device used during presentations… An employee later came forward and said she was going to use the device during a meeting.

City Wallets Ready For Wi-Fi?

10 TV: The City of Columbus is applying for tens of millions of federal dollars to create what would the largest wireless network in the state. The so-called Wi-Fi "cloud" would enable users of laptop computers and other wireless devices to connect to Internet, and to each other, throughout the city…

On Monday night, City Council agreed to seek nearly $38 million in federal stimulus dollars to fund a city-wide wireless broadband network. The city wants to use the network for things like reading water meters rather than going house to house; allowing hospitals to provide tele-medicine by talking to patients over the computer; and for police to download critical information in their onboard computers before they arrive at emergency scene.

The Wi-Fi "cloud" is also seen as a lure to attract new businesses to the city. If Columbus builds the wireless network, the service would not be free to the public. The cost to users is not yet known. The city hopes to learn by November if it qualifies for government funding.

Officers said two men got into a fight at about 12:30 a.m. on Columbus Avenue, located near Lockbourne Road on the city's east side… A man was stabbed multiple times in the chest. The victim, whose name was not immediately released, was transported to Grant Medical Center, where he died.

10 TV: Police said a group of thieves who broke into a north side business early Tuesday may be responsible for a string of other crimes. The burglars cut a hole in the back door of Smokes Plus, located in the Patio Shops on Morse Road, shortly after midnight… They stole several cases of cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash. Investigators believe the same people broke into several other business, including restaurants, on the city's north and west sides. In those crimes, police said they cut a hole just large enough to get their arms through.

10 TV: A man who pleaded guilty to throwing a punch that killed a man outside an Arena District bar was sentenced on Monday to 60 days in jail. Brent Goode also received a four-year suspended jail term, was sentenced to three years probation and will be under house arrest for 60 days… Last month, Goode pleaded guilty to felonious assault in connection with the death of Nick Foss.

Investigators said that on April 6, 2008, the two men got into an argument about a case of beer outside GasWerks bar, located at 487 Park St. According to prosecutors, the argument escalated and Goode punched Foss, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement… Foss, a nursing student, died from his injuries a few days later.

Judge Stephen L. McIntosh issued a challenge to Goode to make something of his life because he was responsible for taking one with so much potential. "We have a life sentence that's with us every day," said Charles Foss, the victim's father. "You don't come to terms with it."

Terri Foss, the victim's mother, said that she misses the text messages she used to get from Nick that said he loved her. The case was moved to a larger courtroom because an overflowed crowd. McIntosh said that in his 25 years on the bench that he has never seen such an outpouring of support for one individual.
